Jean-Baptiste Ponsot 2015 Rully 1er Cru "Montpalais"

Grapes are harvested with a machine and crushed. After a brief cold-settling, they go into a variety of oak barrels (20-25% new depending upon the harvest) where they ferment. Lees are stirred, and the frequency also depends upon the vintage. 100% Malolactic fermentation.

Tasting Notes: The wine is lush and with good acid structure, with a creamy core, tangy citrus and pineapple flavors and well-balanced oak that rides along bright acids on the finish.

Montpalais is a Premier Cru just outside the village whose limestone-strewn soils slope south enabling ultimate maturity while also retaining the ever important acidity. It is a great example of the value one can find in the Cote Chalonnaise. This delicious 1er cru drinks far above its price range and gives fancier bottlings from the Cote de Beaune a run for its money. A beautifully weighted Chardonnay with citrus, peach, white flowers and a terroir-driven core of wet stone and fennel. Far more fine and faceted than we have a right to expect from Burgundy at this price point.
