Pierre Gaillard "Les Gendrines" 2019 Cotes du Rhone Blanc
750 ml, 100% Viognier
"From east-facing parcels in Saint Joseph planted to Viognier, the Cotes du Rhone les Gendrines is one of the more exciting whites in the Gaillard stable. The granite soils are similar to Condrieu, but Viognier isn't permitted in Saint Joseph, hence the modest Cotes du Rhone appellation. It's cool, fresh and floral, with refreshing hints of mint set against a backdrop of plump, fleshy stone fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with a long, lively finish.
For a big man, Pierre Gaillard still moves around the cellar with surpassing grace, easily striding from one barrel to the next. Located above the picturesque medieval village of Malleval, the drive up to his winery and tasting room offers spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. The wines are pretty darn good too, especially the top-end stuff from Saint Joseph and Côte Rôtie. But the best values in the cellar are the surprising IGP Collines Rhodaniennes and the Viognier-based Côtes du Rhône les Gendrines. If the current trend of hot, sunny vintages continues, these will increasingly be wines to seek out." Robert Parker
