Spice Route 2016 Chakalaka Swartland

From South Africa

"Medium-bodied, with a silky feel, displaying a mix of roasted plum and cocoa notes and blood orange acidity. Well-integrated tannins lend a bit of grip but also provide balance. Mourvèdre, Syrah, Carignan, Grenache, Tannat and Petite Sirah. Drink now through 2023." Wine Spectator 89 Points

"Composed of 36% Mourvedre, 22% Shiraz, 13% Carignan, 11% Grenache and 9% of each Tannat and Durif, the 2016 Chakalaka cracks with an open-knit nose of red and black fruit with black spice. Medium-bodied, the wine tastes of blueberry, cranberry with cracked black pepper and tight tannins that seem to be pulling the expression in a different direction. The wine ends with a tight finish with flavors of bitter dark chocolate and dusty spices. Enjoy this wine with barbecue." Robert Parker 88 Points
