The 2026 International Wine & Spirit Competition delivered an impressive year for Scotch whisky, with outstanding results spanning Speyside, Islay, the Highlands and beyond.
The most interesting part of the results wasn't simply the number of medals awarded. According to the IWSC judging team, this year's strongest Scotch whiskies showed a renewed emphasis on balance, patience and precision.
Six Scotch whiskies reached the competition's highest Gold Outstanding level, while another group of exceptional bottles scored 96 and 97 points.
IWSC scores spirits on a 100-point scale: Gold Outstanding is 98–100 points, Gold is 95–97 points, Silver is 90–94 points and Bronze is 85–89 points.
Here are 15 of the highest-scoring Scotch whiskies from the 2026 IWSC worth knowing about.

What Stood Out in the 2026 IWSC Scotch Results?
The scale of the competition was impressive: 545 Scotch whiskies received medals at the 2026 IWSC.
Only six reached Gold Outstanding, and remarkably, all six scored exactly 98 points:
- The GlenAllachie 18 Year Old
- Bowmore 9 Year Old
- Glengoyne 17 Year Old Scottish Oak
- Deanston 17 Year Old Orange Wine Cask
- Spiritfilled Mythical Beasts Aberlour 13 Year Old
- Manta Ray Genesis Bunnahabhain 35 Year Old
The range of those six bottles is revealing. They span ages from just nine to thirty-five years and include official distillery releases, independent bottlings, traditional maturation and unusual cask treatments.
Age alone clearly wasn't enough. A nine-year-old Bowmore received the same 98-point score as a 35-year-old Bunnahabhain.
How Does IWSC Score Scotch Whisky?
IWSC spirits are assessed through blind tasting, meaning judges evaluate the whisky without being influenced by its branding, packaging or reputation.
- Gold Outstanding: 98–100 points
- Gold: 95–97 points
- Silver: 90–94 points
- Bronze: 85–89 points
The difference matters. Chivas Regal 25 and Balvenie PortWood 21 both reached 97 points, putting them just one point below Gold Outstanding, while an extensive group of exceptional Scotch whiskies scored 96 points.
Which 2026 IWSC Scotch Whisky Should You Try?
The answer depends on the style of Scotch you enjoy.
For rich, mature Speyside whisky, The GlenAllachie 18 Year Old is particularly compelling after earning 98 points and Gold Outstanding.
For a luxury Speyside whisky with a distinctive cask finish, Balvenie PortWood 21 scored an exceptional 97 points.
Peat lovers have equally strong options. Bowmore 9 reached 98 points, while Ardbeg 25 earned 96, demonstrating how dramatically Islay whisky can vary in age, intensity and maturation style.
And the results shouldn't be viewed as an instruction about what you're supposed to enjoy. An IWSC score is best treated as an independent data point that can help you discover bottles worth exploring.
