Japan has a long history, and its rich culture has earned its place in the spirit scene. Japanese whisky offers a glimpse into the nation’s tradition for ritual and artisan creations, with a deep love for whisky-making. Every bottle tells a story of passion, commitment, and craftsmanship, making the Japanese whisky-drinking experience appealing to professionals and enthusiasts worldwide.
The history of Japanese whisky goes back a hundred years and is widely regarded as one of the best whiskies in the world. In 1918, a Japanese chemist and brewer, Masataka Taketsuru, went to Scotland to learn how to make whisky. Taketsuru returned to Japan as the Kotobukiya Limited company (later to become Suntory) was looking for someone who could produce whisky to work in the Yamazaki Distillery. Today, Yamazaki Distillery remains one of Japan’s oldest and most respected whisky distilleries. Initially, Taketsura followed Scottish methods and was heavily influenced by Scottish whiskies. However, over time, Japanese distilleries developed their unique style.
The best Japanese whisky online is primarily made from malted barley, often peated and sometimes imported from Scotland. The malted barley is then mashed and distilled twice in the pot stills, leaving behind the chemical substances produced during fermentation, known as congeners, such as tannins. The distiller chooses whether to incorporate these congeners or skilfully remove them. For a single malt, the remaining congeners may be blended with other grain whiskies that have been column-distilled. Like Scotch, Japanese whisky goes through wood aging like American oak, Sherry casks, and Japanese Mizunara. Mizunara oak adds unique notes of citrus, spices, and incense.
While Japanese and Scottish whiskies have much in common, Japanese whisky has a lot of differences from its forebearer and doesn’t consist of just one flavor profile. In Scotland, distillers ensure their drink is consistent, packing in a smoky flavor. Scotch can be peaty and earthy, while Japanese whisky online has many flavors. Japanese distilleries constantly improve their product, producing whiskies with a more delicate taste. Therefore, Japanese whisky is often considered more refined. If you’re looking for Japanese whisky for sale, consider the five types: single malt, grain, blended, single cast, and cask strength.
