PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Clase Azul México has spent nearly three decades proving that tequila can be as much an object of art as a spirit of depth — and the Spirit of Champions is the fullest expression of that philosophy yet. Released in April 2026, it is a bottle built for the historical moment it inhabits: 10,000 one-liter decanters worldwide, never to be replicated, celebrating Mexico's moment as a global host nation at the pinnacle of international sport. Only 10,000 exist. Each is handcrafted. When this bottle is gone, it is gone.

The decanter is extraordinary before the liquid is considered. A sculpture before it is a vessel — elongated, satin-white ceramic with golden ribbons tracing the arc of triumph around its body. Unglazed ceramic bands create a tactile quality that demands to be held rather than simply admired. At the center: the Clase Azul emblem set in malachite inlays — the deep green of the Mexican landscape meeting the gold of achievement. The production team at Clase Azul's Mexican workshop, which has produced every Clase Azul ceramic since the brand's founding, made each of these 10,000 decanters entirely by hand. No two are precisely identical.

The liquid inside was curated by Master Distiller Viridiana Tinoco — one of the most respected women in Mexican spirits — who chose the joven classification with specific purpose. A joven is the intentional marriage of aged and unaged expressions: tequila that has accumulated the depth of time in wood alongside tequila that retains the brightness and aromatic lift of the blanco. For the Spirit of Champions, that balance is achieved through 28 months of aging in fine-grain, lightly toasted French wooden vats from the Forest of Tronçais — the same ancient oak forest in the Allier department of France that produces some of the world's finest cooperage for Cognac and premium wine aging — married with a specially crafted unaged blanco tequila distilled exclusively for this release. The result is deep gold with luminous highlights. Highly complex, aromatic, and smooth. Cooked agave, coconut, toasted wood, vanilla, almond, beeswax, and toasted bread. A spirit of genuine quality housed in one of the most beautiful tequila vessels ever produced.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Clase Azul México was founded in 1997 in Santa María Canchesdé, Oaxaca — though the brand's tequila is produced in Jalisco — by Arturo Lomeli, whose founding conviction was simple and remains unchanged: that the handcrafted ceramic decanter and the ultra-premium tequila inside are equally important expressions of Mexican culture, artistry, and identity. Every Clase Azul bottle is produced by a team of artisan painters and ceramicists at the brand's dedicated workshop, where each decanter is individually wheel-thrown, individually painted, and individually fired — a labor-intensive process that makes the Clase Azul bottle among the most recognized and most collected tequila vessels in the world.

The Spirit of Champions is produced at NOM 1595 under the direction of Master Distiller Viridiana Tinoco. The production begins with 100% Blue Weber Highland agave — slow-cooked for 72 hours in traditional masonry ovens that develop the full, rounded sweetness of cooked piña without the bitterness of faster autoclave processing. Following fermentation and distillation, the aged component of the joven blend enters French wooden vats from the Forest of Tronçais — a specific oak provenance selected by Tinoco for the wood's fine grain structure and light toasting profile. Tronçais oak is the most prized oak in French cooperage for its particularly tight grain, which produces gentler tannin extraction and more delicate aromatic transfer than coarser-grained oak forests. At 28 months in these vats, the tequila develops its aromatic complexity — coconut, vanilla, toasted bread, and almond from the oak's natural compounds interacting with the Blue Weber agave's cooked sweetness — without the heavy wood character that longer aging or more aggressive toast would introduce.

The aged component is then carefully married with a specially crafted unaged blanco tequila distilled exclusively for this release — selected by Tinoco specifically for the aromatic lift and Highland terroir freshness it restores to the blend after 28 months of maturation. The spirit is triple filtered before bottling at 40% ABV, producing the clean, smooth profile that makes the Spirit of Champions as approachable as it is complex. The 1-liter decanter — satin-white ceramic, golden ribbons, malachite inlays — is produced entirely by hand by Clase Azul's Mexican artisans. Kosher certified.

Critics Reviews

No widely published numeric scores from Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, or Whisky Advocate are available for the Spirit of Champions at this time given its April 2026 release. Nestor Liquor's detailed evaluation described "highly complex and aromatic — rich notes of cooked agave, coconut, and toasted wood beautifully interwoven with hints of fresh vanilla, almond, white pepper, beeswax, and toasted bread — full-bodied and exceptionally smooth." The Liquor Barn described "prominent cooked agave sweetness and honey on entry, warm cinnamon, toffee, and delicate herbaceous quality through the mid-palate, medium-long finish with warm softly spiced fadeout and lingering vanilla."

Tasting Profile

Nose Deep gold with luminous highlights — the 28-month Tronçais oak aging's most immediately visible contribution. The nose is highly complex and immediately aromatic — one of the most layered Clase Azul expressions produced. Cooked agave leads with the warm, honeyed sweetness that 72 hours in masonry ovens develops in Blue Weber Highland piña — richer and more fully expressed than shorter cooking processes achieve. Coconut and toasted wood follow from the Tronçais oak's natural lactones and light toast profile — present without heaviness, adding tropical warmth and a subtle woody depth. Fresh vanilla, almond, and beeswax add the creamy, slightly confectionary dimension that distinguishes aged tequila from blanco. Toasted bread and a whisper of white pepper add complexity and a gentle spiced note. The unaged blanco component's contribution is detectable as a fresh, slightly herbal brightness that lifts the whole nose and prevents the aged character from settling into something overly rich or heavy. Floral nuances thread through the whole — subtle, slightly exotic, and deeply inviting.

Palate Full-bodied and exceptionally smooth — the triple filtration and the Tronçais oak's fine-grain character most directly expressed in a mouthfeel of unusual refinement for a joven tequila. Cooked agave sweetness and honey arrive at entry in a generous, warming wave. The mid-palate opens into warm cinnamon, toffee, and a delicate herbaceous quality from the blanco's aromatic contribution. Toasted coconut and walnut deepen the mid-palate complexity alongside vanilla and the gentle sweetness of the Tronçais oak. A gentle spice builds gradually — white pepper and almond providing structural warmth without aggression. The joven architecture's most pleasing quality is most apparent here: the aged component's depth and the unaged component's brightness cycling through the palate in sequence rather than simultaneously, creating a layered progression that neither a pure reposado nor a pure blanco alone could produce.

Finish Medium-long, warm, and softly spiced. Vanilla and a trace of toasted oak lead the close alongside cooked agave sweetness — lingering, clean, and deeply satisfying. A warm, softly spiced fadeout resolves into agave nectar warmth at the very close. The finish is considerably more elegant than most joven expressions — the Tronçais oak's fine grain and light toast producing a wood integration that feels refined rather than imposed.

Serving & Occasion

Best enjoyed neat in a quality tequila glass or wide-bottomed snifter — allow 10 minutes of air for the full aromatic complexity of the Tronçais oak aging and the blanco's fresh lift to develop completely. A few drops of water opens additional aromatic layers and reveals the beeswax and toasted bread notes most fully. A single large ice cube works beautifully for a slower pour where the coconut and vanilla deepen as the temperature changes. The Spirit of Champions is, as Clase Azul positions every decanter release, as appropriate as a display object as it is as a spirit — the handcrafted 1-liter ceramic is among the most visually extraordinary bottles in any spirits collection, and the empty decanter repurposed as a vessel or displayed on a bar deserves its place there permanently. An exceptional gifting bottle for any occasion that merits the most generous and most culturally resonant statement available in tequila: a tribute to Mexico, to craft, to human achievement, and to the art of making something beautiful.

Cocktail Suggestions

Spirit of Champions Old Fashioned (the premium serve) 2 oz Clase Azul Spirit of Champions · 1 tsp agave nectar · 2 dashes Angostura bitters · expressed orange peel. Stirred over a large ice rock. The cooked agave sweetness, vanilla, and cinnamon align naturally with the Old Fashioned format — agave nectar echoes the piña's natural sweetness, and the orange peel amplifies the floral and citrus aromatics that the unaged blanco component introduces.

Champions Paloma 2 oz Clase Azul Spirit of Champions · grapefruit soda · squeeze of fresh lime · pinch of salt. Built over ice in a highball. The tequila's natural sweetness and spice complement fresh grapefruit and sparkling water in the most naturally Mexican and most refreshing long drink format.

Premium Margarita 2 oz Clase Azul Spirit of Champions · 1 oz fresh lime juice · ¾ oz Cointreau · agave nectar to taste · half-salted rim. Shaken over ice, served in a rocks glass. The rich agave character holds its own against fresh lime and orange liqueur — a Margarita of unusual depth and refinement.
