"Onpaper, it shouldn't really work — it'stoo young, too strong, and too peaty,"says Adam Hannett, Bruichladdich's headdistiller and, as of this release, newly appointed master blender. Hecalls it the Impossible Equation, andit's been the guiding philosophy behindOctomore since the range first launchedin 2008: take barley peated togenuinely extreme phenol levels, distill it, age it for only five years— a fraction of what most serioussingle malts require — and somehowproduce something with real elegancerather than pure ashy aggression. Everynew Octomore series is Bruichladdich'slatest attempt to prove the equationsolvable, and Series 16's secondrelease, 16.2, tackles it from agenuinely new angle.
16.2 uses theexact same barley as its sibling 16.1 —100% Scottish Mainland Concerto, maltedto 101.4 PPM, a comparativelyrestrained peat level by Octomore's ownextreme standards (the series haspushed barley as high as 307 PPM inpast years), but still enormously smokyby any conventional whisky measure. Theentire point of the .2 expression eachyear is direct comparison: same barley, same distillation, completely differentwood. For 16.2 specifically,Bruichladdich has done something it hasnever done before in the Octomore range— a four-cask maturation combiningOloroso sherry and Bordeaux wine caskswith a secondary finish in Madeira andPortuguese Moscatel wood. It's agenuinely new layering strategy for theseries, and the result is a whiskywhere the peat functions less as thestar of the show and more as astructural backbone, letting driedfruit, floral honey, and coastalsalinity share the stage with the smokerather than being buried beneath it.
Bruichladdich's own tasting notesdescribe immediate, yet gentle peatsmoke followed by salted caramel, honeyed melon, and apricot, with sweetmalt sugars intermingling with cinnamonand star anise, building through seasalt, toffee, chocolate, and coconuttoward a long, lingering finish whereblack pepper and toffee intertwine withsea salt for a complex, satisfyingclose. Bottled at 58.1% ABV, non-chillfiltered, no added color — the sameuncompromising presentation standardBruichladdich applies across everyOctomore release. For anyone who hasfollowed the .2 expression acrossprevious series, 16.2 represents agenuine departure in cask strategy, andone of the more ambitious experimentsyet in Bruichladdich's ongoing effortto redefine what heavily peated whiskyis capable of.
Bruichladdich Distillery was founded in 1881 onthe Rhinns of Islay, and today producesone of the most experimentally mindedranges in all of Scotch whisky — fromthe entirely unpeated Classic Laddiecore expression to the intensely smokyPort Charlotte and, at the far extreme,Octomore, which has redefined the upperlimits of peat intensity in single maltScotch since its 2008 launch. Octomoreis matured for just five years andbottled close to cask strength everysingle release — a combination thedistillery itself has long described as"The Impossible Equation," sinceconventional whisky wisdom holds thatyoung, high-proof, heavily peatedspirit shouldn't achieve genuineelegance. Octomore has spent everyseries since proving otherwise.
Series16 comprises four expressions exploringdifferent dimensions of the sameunderlying question: 16.1, the series'reference point, matured entirely infirst-fill bourbon barrels; 16.2, usingidentical barley to 16.1 but agedinstead in a predominantly Europeanwine and fortified wine cask program;16.3, an ultra-high-provenance singlemalt using barley grown exclusively ina single field on Octomore Farm itself;and 16.4, exploring the influence ofvirgin oak, released as a distilleryexclusive. 16.2 is distilled from 100%Scottish Mainland Concerto barley — atwo-row spring variety prized for itshigh starch content and cleanfermentation character — malted to101.4 PPM. The whisky matures for fiveyears across Oloroso sherry andBordeaux wine casks, followed by afinishing period in Madeira andPortuguese Moscatel casks — the firsttime this specific four-caskcombination has been used anywhere inthe Octomore range. Bottled at 58.1%ABV / 116.2 proof, released withoutchill filtration or added color.
Drinkhacker (Christopher Null, Series 16 review, house-level context):
Reviewed alongside 16.1 and 16.3 as part ofBruichladdich's annual Octomore seriestasting, guided by Master Blender AdamHannett.
Adam Hannett, Head Distiller & Master Blender, Bruichladdich:
"Octomoreexists to provoke and challenge.Something that is on paper sopolarizing, it shouldn't really work —it's too young, too strong and toopeaty — hence the Impossible Equation. But with each new Octomore expression, the spirit continues to surprise anddelight with its depth, its campfiresmoke and its incredible flavorprofile."
Bruichladdich official tasting notes:
"Immediate, yet gentle, peat smokefollowed by salted caramel, honeyedmelon and apricot. Sweet malt sugarsintermingle with cinnamon and staranise. Sea salt, toffee, chocolate andcoconut follow, accompanied by a softwave of earthy minerality andlingering smoke. The finish is long andlingering, with the signature peatsmoke taking centre stage. Black pepperand toffee intertwine with seasalt, creating a complex and satisfyingconclusion."
Nose
Immediate, yet gentle peat smoke opens, joinedby sweet peat and honeyed florals —orange blossom and coastal freshnessthreading through. Salted caramel, honeyed melon, and apricot build warmsweetness, alongside sweet malt sugars, cinnamon, and star anise. Dried fruitand red berries add layered fruitcomplexity beneath the smoke.
Palate
Sea salt, toffee, chocolate, and coconut carry the mid-palate,accompanied by a soft wave of earthyminerality. Caramelized sugar and driedfruit continue from the nose, withfloral notes and gentle warming spicerounding out a palate where the 101.4PPM peat acts as structure rather thanthe singular focus — dried fruit, floral honey, and coastal salinity allsharing genuine space alongside thesmoke.
Finish
Long and lingering, with the signature peat smoke takingcentre stage at the close. Black pepperand toffee intertwine with sea salt fora complex, satisfying conclusion —warming, persistent, and genuinelyrewarding across multiple sips as thewhisky continues to open in the glass.
