Domaine Armand Rousseau 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers" 750ml

Les Cazetiers sits just over the wall from Clos Saint-Jacques — arguably Gevrey-Chambertin's most exalted Premier Cru — and Rousseau's own parcel, just 0.6 hectares, lies downslope from the neighboring Bruno Clair holding. The soil here is a genuinely distinctive orange ochre, rich in both clay and limestone, structured in three layers: ostrea acuminata marl at the top, a band of rocks and pebbles through the middle, and silt, clay, and loose limestone at the base. That limestone does real work, helping drain the vineyard while absorbing daytime heat and releasing it back to the vines through the night.

Domaine Armand Rousseau needs little introduction to serious Burgundy collectors — it is, by wide consensus, one of the handful of domaines that define what red Burgundy can achieve at its absolute peak, maintained today under Cyrielle Rousseau, whose methods have changed little since the domaine's earliest harvests. For this cuvée, she has recently begun including fruit from the vineyard's young vines, a change she believes brings out even more of the site's natural minerality. 2020 was an exceptional vintage across the entire Rousseau range, and the critical response to this bottling reflects it directly. Origins & Craftsmanship

Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most historically significant and most consistently celebrated estates, today led by Cyrielle Rousseau, who continues winemaking methods largely unchanged since the domaine's earliest harvests — careful, rigorous monitoring at every stage of fermentation, with minimal intervention otherwise. The domaine farms parcels across some of the Côte de Nuits' most exalted sites, including holdings in Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze, Clos Saint-Jacques, Clos de la Roche, Ruchottes-Chambertin (Clos des Ruchottes, a monopole), and Mazy-Chambertin, alongside its Premier Cru and village-level Gevrey-Chambertin bottlings.

Les Cazetiers is sourced from a 0.6-hectare parcel lying just over the wall from Clos Saint-Jacques, downslope from the neighboring Bruno Clair holding. The soil is a distinctive orange ochre, rich in both clay and limestone, structured across three layers: a predominantly light, clay-rich ostrea acuminata marl at the top of the slope, a middle band of rocks and pebbles, and a base of silt, additional clay, and loose limestone. The limestone content improves drainage while also absorbing heat during the day and releasing it to the vines overnight — a natural moderating effect supporting even ripening. For the 2020 vintage, Cyrielle Rousseau began including fruit from the parcel's young vines for the first time, a change she believes helps bring out additional minerality in the finished wine. Vinification follows a gentle fermentation, with aging in used casks — a deliberate choice that preserves clear, pure fruit expression and allows the vineyard's specific mineral and earthy character to come through without oak dominance.
