Knob Creek was introduced in 1992 by Booker Noe, the legendary Beam master distiller who created the original small-batch bourbon category, and it has built its reputation on full-flavored, 100-proof bourbon made in a “pre-Prohibition style.” For years, ultra-aged releases were something other brands did. In October 2025, the James B. Beam Distilling Co. changed that with Knob Creek 21 Year Old, the oldest expression in the history of both Knob Creek and the Beam distillery, and the first Knob Creek to pass the 20-year mark. It returned in 2026, in limited quantities, after selling through its first run.
The whiskey has an unusual story. It began as a batch of barrels laid down in 2004, “with no big plan,” and it was distilled by Fred Noe, Booker’s son, before Suntory’s acquisition of Beam in 2014, so its production spans two eras of the company. Master distillers Fred Noe and his son Freddie, the eighth-generation master distiller, hand-selected each barrel for flavor and balance. It’s bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV), the Knob Creek house strength, and it comes in a keepsake box.
The official notes describe a nose that “opens with aromas of seasoned oak, caramelized sugar, and subtle smoke”; a palate where “deep caramel and char build alongside hints of fruit and toasted oak”; and a “long, warm finish of toffee and charred wood.” Reviewers add detail. Robb Report called it “fantastic” and “better than the 18-year-old,” with “some of that classic Beam peanut flavor” surrounded by “dark chocolate, blackberry, maple, leather, tobacco, brûléed vanilla, and toasted coconut,” observing that “at 100 proof there’s still enough heat to cut through with some spice and heft,” and that it’s “not overly tannic.” The Daily Pour found “a mix of dessert-like sweetness and substantial oak, with notes of butterscotch, cherry, and cinnamon.” The Whiskey Wash found it “oakier than most batches of the 18 year old, but more balanced than the 15 year old, which it called polarizing.”
The oak is the star here, and customers should know it: this is a bold, woody, tannic-leaning bourbon, with the dessert sweetness that comes after twenty-one years in the barrel. As one reviewer put it, a lower proof would have left it “limp and more like sucking on wet wood,” so 100 proof is what makes it work. It’s a collectible for Knob Creek and Beam fans, an easy milestone gift, and a good addition to any aged bourbon collection. Pour it neat.
Knob Creek 21 Year Old is produced by the James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky, from barrels laid down in 2004, hand-selected by master distillers Fred Noe and Freddie Noe. A Kentucky straight bourbon aged 21 years. Bottled at 50% ABV / 100 proof, 750ml, in a keepsake box. A limited release first launched in October 2025, returning for 2026.
Robb Report (October 2025):
“There’s still some of that classic Beam peanut flavor as you sip, but it’s surrounded by notes of dark chocolate, blackberry, maple, leather, tobacco, brûléed vanilla, and toasted coconut... Knob Creek 21 is a really excellent example of an older bourbon that actually tastes good and isn’t just an age-statement flex.” (Described as better than the 18-year-old; “at 100 proof there’s still enough heat to cut through with some spice and heft.”)
