Shenk's Homestead carries a genuine piece of American whiskey history behind its name — John Shenk founded a distillery in Pennsylvania back in 1753 that would eventually, generations later, become known as Michter's. This annual release, part of Michter's limited-edition Legacy Series, honors that origin directly, made in Kentucky using the traditional sour mash process, where a portion of the previously distilled whiskey mash — the "setback" — is carried into the next batch, a genuine link to how American whiskey was made in Shenk's own era.
This year's recipe leans rye-forward, and Master Distiller Dan McKee added something new to the 2026 batch: caramel malted barley, chosen specifically to build a genuine "caramel bread pudding note" that balances the rye's naturally spicier character. Some of the fully matured whiskey was further finished in toasted-only French oak barrels — deliberately never charred — sourced from the Vosges forest, naturally air-dried and seasoned for 24 months before being toasted to Michter's own exacting specifications.
