PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
KermitLynch has been importing French wine toCalifornia since 1972. He fell in lovewith Provence early — specifically withthe Bandols of Domaine Tempier, whichhe began importing in 1977 — and hasspent so much time there since that henow lives near Bandol most of the year. When a man whose entire professionallife has been spent in the pursuit ofgreat French wine chooses to livebeside the appellation that producesthe Terrebrune rosé, that is its ownendorsement.
Domaine de Terrebrune wasestablished in 1963 by Georges Delillein Ollioules — a small town betweenToulon and Bandol whose terraced slopesof brown clay and limestone overlookingthe Mediterranean constitute some ofthe most specifically and the mosthistorically distinctive vine-growingterrain in the entire appellation.Reynald Delille runs the domaine today, and he is revered by his Provençalpeers, as Kermit Lynch's own teamdescribes him, as "a rosémaster" whose bottlings arecelebrated for their complexity andage-worthiness. The advice fromLynch's merchant: "save a bottle forfive, ten, or twenty years — a pleasantsurprise awaits." For a rosé. Thenumber of producers anywhere in theworld about whom that statement isgenuinely true you can count onone hand.
The production of Terrebrunerosé is the mostspecifically unusual and the mostclearly age-worthiness-focused inthe Blackwell's Bandol section. Wheremost Bandol rosés are aged in stainlesssteel and released young andfresh, Terrebrune ages its rosé for 18months in large oakfoudres of 40 to 60hectoliters — a methodborrowed from white Burgundy and fromthe finest Bandol rouge production, which integrates anddevelops the Mourvèdre's most complexsecondary aromatic compounds over afull year and a half before bottling. The vineyard yield is among the lowestin the appellation: one vine equals onebottle. The result is a roséwhose nose evokes, in Kermit Lynch'sown words, "a Provençalsummer with notes of thyme and whitepeach, and amouthwateringly salty finish." Andthen, five years later, something significantly more complexthan that.
Threeconsecutive vintages at 91 points.Imported by Kermit Lynch. Aged in oakfoudres. From one of the mostspecifically serious rosé producers onearth.
Domainede Terrebrune was founded in 1963 byGeorges Delille in Ollioules — a townin the Var département whose positionbetween Toulon and Bandol gives itsvineyards both the maritime influenceof the Mediterraneancoast and the more specificallycontinental heat accumulation of thehillside terraces that characterize theappellation's interior. The nameTerrebrune derives from the "brownearth" — the specific brown clay, pebble, and limestone soilformed millions of years ago on theestate's land, whose precisecomposition is the direct source of thedistinctly saline and specificallymineral secondary quality thatTerrebrune's wines carry in everyvintage.
Reynald Delille runs thedomaine today, maintaining anddeepening the organic viticulture thathis father established. No weedkillers, insecticides, or syntheticchemicals are used in the Terrebrunevineyard. Ploughing is performed with aplow. Picking, sorting, and harvestingare done manually. In the winter, sheepand goats are grazed among the vinesfor natural weed control — the mostspecifically integrated and the mostself-sustaining agricultural approachavailable for any Bandol estate. Theyield is among the most strictlycontrolled in the appellation: one vineequals one bottle, the mostspecifically low-yield and the mostdirectly flavor-concentration-communicating production metric available for anyFrench rosé.
The blend — 60%Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 20% Cinsault —is the most Mourvèdre-forward roséblend in the Blackwell's section, exceeding the appellation's 50% minimumwith a full 10% additional Mourvèdrewhose structural weight, spice, andspecific aromatic complexity add adimension to the rosé that lighterblends cannot approach. Grapes undergodirect pressing — whole cluster pressedwithout skin maceration, unlike theGros Noré's 24-hour approach — andfermentation occurs at low temperaturesin stainless steel vats to preservefreshness and aromatic purity. The winethen spends 18 months in large oakfoudres of 40 to 60 hectoliters — thecooperage decision that mostspecifically and the most dramaticallydistinguishes Terrebrune from virtuallyevery other Bandol rosé producer. Thefoudre size matters: at 40 to 60hectoliters, these are barrels manytimes larger than a standard barrique, whose very low wine-to-wood ratiodeposits oak character slowly, gently, and specifically in the integration ofthe Mourvèdre's secondary aromaticcompounds rather than in the additionof new wood flavors. After bottling, the wine continues to evolve — thereason Kermit Lynch recommendscellaring for five to twenty years isnot simply marketing but the specificand genuinely earned claim of aproducer whose older vintages haveproven it true.

James Suckling (2017 vintage):
"Amber-orange tinge with aromas of roastedhazelnuts, brioche, orange curd, nutmegand spiced apples.Full-bodied, spicy and flavorful, withcreamy and oily layers and a tasty, weighty finish. 60% Mourvèdre withGrenache and Cinsault. Fromorganically grown grapes."
French reviewer (confirmed prior vintage):
"A delicious, medium-bodied roséwith an ample and enveloping mouth, imposing its dense and pulpy flesh withaccents of crushed strawberry andsavory spices, on a mineral backbone ofextreme freshness. The long finish isremarkably delicate and refined. Aradiant Bandol."
Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant (current and past vintages):
"Terrebrune'sBandol epitomizes the idea of aterroir-driven rosé, from the nose ofthyme and white peach, redolent of aProvençal summer, to itsmouthwateringly salty finish, areminder that the sea is just a stone'sthrow away. For conclusive evidencethat this is no ordinary rosé, save abottle for five, ten, or twenty years— a pleasant surprise awaits."
"Reynald Delille is a rosémaster, revered by his Provençalpeers for the complexity andage-worthiness of his bottling eachyear. While a cool glass ofTerrebrune's dry, peach-scented Bandolrosé is the bee's knees on a warmsummer afternoon, it's alsodeliciously bracing with oysters on ablustery winter day, delightful with asalad made from spring's firstproduce, and the perfect complement toyourThanksgiving feast."
Infinivin (2024 confirmed):
"One ofthe great Bandol rosé wines toknow — notes of licorice appearand mingle with the dominant ofexotic fruits. Length, depth andbeautiful complexity. Some bitters giverelief to the tasting and reinforce thepower of the vintage."
Merchant of Wine (winemaker's notes confirmed):
"An exotic nose dominatedby pomelo, then honeysuckle and wetroses emerge, and then develops thecomplexity of a potpourri of flowerpetals. The palate is marked by thedelicate structure of its bitters."
Wine Spectator (Terrebrune selected for Top 10 Provence Rosés to drink in Summer 2025)
The following profile is built from the confirmed Terrebrune house style across recent vintages. 2025-specific critic notes are not yet published.
Nose
Pale salmon with copper reflections —the direct pressing and thelow-temperature fermentation producinga color of delicacy and refinement thatbelies the 18 months of foudre agingbehind it. The nose opens with thequality that Kermit Lynch's team hasconsistently identified as the mostimmediately and the most memorablyTerrebrune-distinctive aromatic: thymeand white peach arriving together, thethyme adding the most specifically andthe most unmistakably Provençalgarrigue-herb quality and the whitepeach adding the most generous and themost delicate stone fruit dimension ina combination that is genuinely"redolent of a Provençal summer." Anexotic nose dominated by pomelo — thelarge citrus fruit whose aromatic, slightly bitter character is morecomplex and more specifically unusualthan standard citrus. Honeysuckle andwet roses emerge progressively with themost delicate and the most specificallyperfumed floral quality. A potpourri offlower petals develops with air. Redfruit — crushed strawberry — addswarmth and vividity. White pepper andspice add the Mourvèdre's mostcharacteristic secondary aromatic.Licorice adds the most specificallyunusual and the most specificallyappealing herbal depth. Notes of exoticfruits carry through from the warmermaritime influence of the Ollioulesterroir.
Palate
Dense, pulpy, andample with extreme mineral freshness —the most paradoxical and the mostspecifically Terrebrune-distinctivepalate quality, the rich Mourvèdrefruit and the 18 months of foudreintegration producing a palate ofconsiderable substance while themineral backbone of extreme freshnessfrom the brown clay and limestoneterroir provides precisely thecounterweight that prevents the winefrom feeling simply heavy. Crushedstrawberry and savory spices carry theprimary fruit and botanical characterwith genuine generosity. The bitters —the delicatestructure of bitter herbs and theMourvèdre's natural tannincontribution — give relief to thetasting and reinforce the power of thevintage, preventing the Mourvèdrerichness from becomingunchecked sweetness. Thesaline quality that the seaproximity deposits — themouthwateringly salty quality thatKermit Lynch identifies as thefinish's most memorablecharacteristic — begins to emergethrough the mid-palate andcarries through to the close with themost specifically and the mostpersistently maritime-terroir-communicating quality available in any rosé inthe section.
Finish
Long, saline, and refined. Themouthwateringly salty finish is themost enduringly memorable andthe most specificallyTerrebrune-distinctive single qualityin the entire wine — the finish thatimmediately tells the buyer this wineis made from organically farmedMourvèdre vines on brown clay andlimestone hillsides above theMediterranean, that the sea is close, and that the winemaker has extractedevery drop of the terroir's mineralcharacter into the glass. Crushedstrawberry, savory spice, and thelicorice note linger alongside thesaline quality. The long finish isremarkably delicate and refined — the18 months of large-vessel oakhaving integrated every componentinto something more completeand more specifically evolvedthan young, direct-press Bandolrosé typically achieves. And this isthe wine at release — in five years,as Kermit Lynch promises, it willbe something significantly moreinteresting still.
