PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Rosé Champagne has a long historyat Maison Mumm. Early inthe 19th century — before mostof the world's most celebratedChampagne houses had evenbeen founded — the father ofGeorges Hermann Mumm wasalready producing a well-regarded "oeilde perdrix"Champagne, its deep pink hue recallingthe color of apartridge's eye. The first Mumm CordonRosé cuvée was released in1952 by René Lalou, the house'spresident and presiding figure of the20th century. The Cordon Rosé wasserved at the table of the Élysée Palace. In 1958, the painter Léonard Foujita — the celebrated Franco-Japanese artist — designed a rose motif that has decorated the Mumm rosé bottles ever since.

This is one of France's most historically pedigreed rosé Champagnes, produced by the world's fourth-largest Champagne house from 120+ crus across the Champagne region, with 60% Pinot Noir, 22% Chardonnay, and 18% Pinot Meunier as the base blend — joined at blending by 14% still red wine from the house's own Pinot Noir vineyards to create the luminous pale salmon colorand the forest fruit intensity thatdefines the Cordon Rosé's distinctivecharacter. Tastings.com awarded 95Points. Multiple critics have foundstrawberries, cherries, red currants, vanilla, and caramel on the nose — witha creamy, round, balanced palate ofcandied pink grapefruit zest, toastedbrioche, melon, and spice — driven by abright, snappy acidity that carries thelingering, smoke-tinged finish.

At $50at Blackwell's, this is the mostgenerously priced prestige roséChampagne currently on our shelves —95-point, Élysée-served,19th-century-heritage,Foujita-decorated, luminous pale salmonMumm Grand Cordon Rosé at a price thatmakes it as appropriate for a Tuesdayevening as it is for a celebration.

Origins & Craftsmanship

G.H.Mumm was founded in 1827 — establishedin Reims by three German brothers,Gottlieb, Jacobus, and Philipp Mumm, who carried the winemaking heritage oftheir father's Cologne-based winebusiness to the Champagne region. Thehouse took its full name when PeterArnold Mumm's grandson, Georges HermannMumm, took the reins in 1852 — and theCordon Rouge, with its distinctivediagonal red ribbon, became one of themost recognized symbols in Champagne.Today Mumm is the world'sfourth-largest Champagne producer, owned by Pernod Ricard, and one of theofficial Champagnes of the KentuckyDerby and the Melbourne Cup.

The GrandCordon Rosé is made from the same richpalette of 120+ crus that defines thestandard Cordon Rouge blend —representing all the diversity of theChampagne region's terroirs, from theMontagne de Reims's Pinot Noir power tothe Côte des Blancs's Chardonnayelegance to the Vallée de la Marne'sPinot Meunier freshness. The base blendof 60% Pinot Noir, 22% Chardonnay, and18% Pinot Meunier is the precisespecification that the house hasrefined since the 1952 inauguralrelease. The color and intensity comefrom a 14% addition of still red winefrom Mumm's own Pinot Noir vineyards atblending — the assemblage method thatgives the Cordon Rosé a more structuredand more specifically PinotNoir-influenced character than asaignée rosé of comparable depth wouldproduce. Dosage is 1.0 g/L —essentially bone dry, allowing thefruit and the structure to lead withoutsweetness softening the picture.
