PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Justin Vineyards & Winery was founded in 1981 by Justin and Deborah Baldwin in Paso Robles — a pioneering effort on the Central Coast at a time when the region's potential for world-class wine was still largely unproven. Today, Justin is one of the most recognized and most commercially successful wine brands on the Central Coast, best known for its Isosceles blend and its Cabernet Sauvignon program. The Sauvignon Blanc occupies a different corner of the portfolio — lighter, fresher, built for versatility — and it is one of the most reliably well-executed expressions of the variety made anywhere on the California Central Coast.
The 2024 vintage is sourced from vineyards across the Central Coast, deliberately spanning two distinct terroir types. The cool, limestone-laden Templeton Gap area provides the mineral spine and natural acidity that define the wine's structure. The warmer, sandy, river-influenced eastern regions contribute the tropical fruit richness and textural weight that give the wine its balance. Both components are whole-cluster pressed and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel, with no malolactic fermentation — a deliberate stylistic choice that preserves every gram of the variety's natural acidity and aromatic freshness, unmodified by oak or post-fermentation conversion.
The result is a wine of genuine expressiveness: pomelo, lemon balm, chervil, tropical papaya, and yuzu on the nose, alongside a slate-like minerality that arrives as the most specifically terroir-communicating note in the entire aromatic profile. On the palate, tart pineapple and guava open the entry, giving way to a linear, mineral-driven mid-palate balanced by ripe nectarine and green apple. The finish is light, clean, and herbaceous, with pleasant herbal notes and an oyster shell salinity that closes the wine with a genuinely maritime, mineral-driven quality rarely found in California Sauvignon Blanc at this price point. Crisp, dry, and medium-bodied — a refreshing summer aperitif and a versatile food-pairing wine for an impressive range of cheeses, seafood, and light dining occasions.
JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery was established in 1981 by Justin and Deborah Baldwin in Paso Robles — an early bet on the Central Coast appellation that has since proved entirely justified by the region's rise to international recognition. The winery is located in the Adelaide Hills district of Paso Robles, known for its calcareous soils, dramatic day-to-night temperature swings, and consistent production of Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines with structure and longevity. Justin was acquired by The Wine Group in 2010 and has continued to expand both its portfolio and its distribution reach under that ownership.
The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from across the broader Central Coast appellation, drawing from two meaningfully different growing environments. The cool, limestone-laden Templeton Gap area sits at the western edge of Paso Robles, where afternoon Pacific Ocean breezes funnel through the Santa Lucia Range, dramatically reducing afternoon temperatures and producing fruit of natural mineral intensity and crisp acidity. The warmer, sandy, river-influenced vineyards of the eastern Central Coast contribute a softer, more tropical fruit character and textural richness that complements the mineral backbone from the western sites. This deliberate blending of cool and warm sources produces what the winery describes as a "clean, textured palate with bright citrus and tropical fruit with a hint of fresh herbs balanced with a crisp, refreshing mineral structure."
Production is entirely in stainless steel — whole-cluster pressed to preserve the delicate aromatic characteristics of the variety, then fermented at cool temperatures to lock in freshness. No malolactic fermentation is performed, maintaining full natural acidity throughout. The result is bottled in a straightforwardly fruit-forward, mineral-driven, food-ready style.
Wine Enthusiast (2023 vintage — house style context):
"Light lemon peel, wet stone and nectarine aromas make for a classic nose on this bottling. Green apple and honeydew flavors arise on the palate, where the texture is more smooth than zesty."
JUSTIN Vineyards official 2024 tasting notes:
"Clear and bright in the glass, pale straw in color with green highlights. Expressive notes of pomelo, lemon balm, chervil, tropical papaya and yuzu, and slate-like minerality. Delicately structured and dry on the palate, opening with tart pineapple and guava fruit, lemongrass, and lime zest. The midpalate is linear and mineral-driven, balanced by ripe nectarine and green apple. The finish is light and clean, with pleasant herbal notes and oyster shell salinity."
Nose
Clear and bright, pale straw in color with green highlights and moderate tears. Expressive and aromatic, opening with pomelo and lemon balm leading the citrus profile. Chervil adds a delicate, savory herbal note — the most specifically herbaceous secondary aromatic that distinguishes this from simpler California Sauvignon Blancs. Tropical papaya and yuzu add exotic, slightly Asian-citrus fruit complexity. Slate-like minerality threads through as the most specifically terroir-communicating secondary note — the Templeton Gap limestone most directly apparent in the glass.
Palate
Delicately structured and genuinely dry, opening with tart pineapple and guava fruit alongside lemongrass and lime zest. The midpalate is linear and mineral-driven — the Templeton Gap limestone's most direct palate contribution — balanced by ripe nectarine and green apple that carry the wine's more tropical, warmer-site character.
Finish
Light and clean, with pleasant herbal notes and oyster shell salinity closing the wine with a genuinely maritime, mineral-driven quality. The finish is refreshing and food-inviting rather than simply disappearing — a sustained herbal and mineral character that makes this wine work as well at the table as it does on its own.
