The 2019 Viña Ardanza Reserva from Bodegas La Rioja Alta delivers refined Rioja style with vibrant fruit, generous elegance and classic structure. It balances lush cherry and dark‐berry richness with firm oak and poised acidity—winning for both moderately early drinking and medium‐term cellaring.
This release comes from Spain’s renowned Rioja region (the Rioja Alta sub‐zone). The wine is crafted using approximately 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha, drawn from established vineyards in Fuenmayor, Cenicero and Tudelilla. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel followed by ageing in American oak barrels—36 months for the Tempranillo portion, 30 months for the Garnacha. The wine is then bottled after blending. The 2019 vintage was warm and produced concentrated fruit, while the estate preserved its trademark elegance and freshness.
Wine critic Luis Gutiérrez (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) awarded the 2019 Ardanza 94 points, noting that the warm vintage produced a “spicy, structured, balanced and powerful” wine marked by classic oak and a fresh fruit profile.
Critic Joaquín Hidalgo (for Vinous) rated it 93 points, stating: “The bouquet opens with cherry liqueur, black fruit and balsamic herbs alongside a touch of pepper. Dry, silky and just fresh enough… the long, sapid finish continues with gentle grip.”
Another review from Decanter described the wine as “a super-classic and great interpretation of Rioja Reserva… sweet red berry fruit and American oak with serious structure and balance.”
Nose: Medium-deep ruby. Aromas of cherry liqueur, ripe black berries, balsamic herb notes, warm spice (clove/pepper) and subtle vanilla/cedar from American oak.
Palate: Medium‐to‐full body; vibrant red and dark fruit (cherry, raspberry, blackcurrant) driven by a lively acid line; layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, gentle sweet spice and fine‐grained tannins.
Finish: Long and sapid; the mineral tension and oak linger with an echo of black berry and orange rind, offering clarity and depth.
