Laberdolive occupies a genuinely rarified place in the world of spirits. As Charles Neal wrote in his definitive guide to Armagnac: "Laberdolive. The very name carries with it an aura. With regards to reputation, the family firm sits upon France's upper echelon alongside Mouton, Romanée-Conti, Pétrus, Roederer, Guigal, Yquem." David Ridgway, chef-sommelier at La Tour d'Argent in Paris, has called Laberdolive simply "considered for a long time to be the benchmark of Armagnac." The house's own history carries the kind of stories that only accrue to spirits of genuine renown: Nikita Khrushchev reportedly diverted his entire, heavily-guarded entourage during a state visit specifically to acquire a bottle at the distillery itself, and French President Jacques Chirac once brought along a Laberdolive 1972 to toast on a state visit to China.
This particular bottling comes from Domaine du Pillon, one of the estate's grand-cru vineyard sites, distilled in a single vintage — 1962 — and left to mature for more than sixty years in Gascon oak before this November 2025 bottling. Every Laberdolive Armagnac is genuinely hand-made, vintage-dated, and single-vineyard — no blending across years, no averaging out a house style, just one specific harvest's fruit, distilled once and left to develop for decades in wood.
Wine Enthusiast's blind tasting captured the result in real detail: "first sniffs reveal deep-seated aromas that are dry, moderately candied and oaky on the surface; with swirling, the bouquet exposes dry aromas of orange pekoe tea, cedar, black pepper and old oak. Semisweet to sweet entry tastes of dark caramel, nougat and bittersweet chocolate; flavors of marshmallow, candied almonds, dried apricot and honey get added to the mix at midpalate. Huge depth and multiple layers in the taste and finish phases. A brandy beast to stalk your cellar." A CellarTracker reviewer found it "magical, unfurling in the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of dried fruits, candied peel, vanilla pod and pine resin. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and integrated, it's concentrated but weightless, concluding with an immensely long finish." This is genuinely one of the most respected names in all of Armagnac — a spirit that's earned comparisons to Bordeaux's and Burgundy's very finest, now available in a bottling that's spent well over six decades quietly deepening in oak.
Laberdolive Armagnacs are hand-made, vintage-dated, single-vineyard expressions of Bas Armagnac, produced from grapes grown at the estate's grand-cru sites in Gascony, southwest France. The house has long been regarded, by a consensus of connoisseurs, as the exemplar of the highest standard Armagnac can achieve — a reputation built and sustained across generations of family production.
This bottling was distilled in 1962 from grapes grown at Domaine du Pillon, one of Laberdolive's grand-cru vineyard sites, and matured for more than sixty years in Gascon oak before bottling in November 2025. Bottled at 44% ABV, 700ml.
