Nikka From the Barrel 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Japanese Whisky Gift Set 3 x 500ml

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Nikka From The Barrel is one of the most beloved Japanese whiskies ever produced — named Whisky Advocate's #1 Whisky of the Year in 2018, consistently described by Robb Report as one of the best non-age-stated blends in the world, and celebrated by The Whiskey Wash as "an icon of Japanese whiskey craftsmanship." Since its debut in 1985 in its iconic small square bottle, From The Barrel has broken with every industry convention: bottled directly from the cask at high proof, unapologetically bold, and built on a philosophy of complexity over delicacy. Forty years later, Nikka has chosen the most fitting possible anniversary gift: not simply a commemorative bottling, but a complete deconstruction of the blend itself.

This three-bottle gift set is the most intellectually ambitious Japanese whisky release of 2025 — and one of the most commercially significant limited releases in the category's history. For the first time ever, Nikka has separated the two foundational components of From The Barrel into individual bottles — Malt Pieces of the Barrel and Grain Pieces of the Barrel, each bottled at cask strength — and placed them alongside Extra Marriage, the 40th anniversary expression that doubles the standard cask marriage period to produce the deepest and most harmonious From The Barrel ever made. The result is an experience that no other whisky set has ever offered: the ability to taste each building block of a legendary blend in isolation before witnessing their perfect reunion in a single glass.

Limited to 800 sets worldwide. Not available as individual bottles anywhere. When these are gone, this experience is gone permanently.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Nikka Whisky was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru — the father of Japanese whisky, who studied distillation in Scotland, married a Scottish woman named Rita Cowan, and returned to Japan with the knowledge and passion to build a whisky tradition from nothing. His two distilleries — Yoichi, established in 1934 on Hokkaido's northern coast in a climate and landscape deliberately chosen to mirror Scotland, and Miyagikyo, founded in 1969 in the verdant mountain valley of Sendai — remain the two most important production sites in the Nikka portfolio and the heart of From The Barrel's malt component.

Nikka From The Barrel was launched in 1985 — a deliberate departure from the industry trend toward lighter, more delicate Japanese whiskies — delivering a blend of over 100 malt and grain whiskies at an unapologetically high proof in its distinctive small square bottle. The blend combines malt whiskies from both Yoichi and Miyagikyo — Yoichi contributing intense peat, smoke, and marine character; Miyagikyo adding fruit, floral elegance, and suppleness — with grain whiskies produced in Nikka's legendary Coffey stills imported from Scotland in 1963, which produce an unusually characterful, complex grain spirit quite unlike the neutral column still grain whisky used by most blenders.

The 40th Anniversary Gift Set contains three distinct expressions:

Malt Pieces of the Barrel — 116 Proof / 58% ABV The malt component of From The Barrel isolated and bottled at cask strength for the first time. Sourced primarily from Yoichi and Miyagikyo, with a specific addition of heavily peated Yoichi whisky aged in new American oak to add depth, backbone, and a long satisfying finish. Peat, smoke, intense malt character, herbs, fruit, and medicinal complexity — bold and muscular, the structural engine of the entire From The Barrel blend.

Grain Pieces of the Barrel — 116 Proof / 58% ABV The grain component — produced in Nikka's 1963 Coffey stills — isolated and bottled at cask strength for the first time. Incorporating corn and rye whiskies from Satsuma Tsukasa alongside matured Coffey grain. The softer, rounder, more approachable counterpart to the Malt Pieces: vanilla, banana cake, marmalade, fresh fruit, herbs, flowers, and a warm spicy backbone with hints of chili that binds the blend's structure together.

Extra Marriage — 102.8 Proof / 51.4% ABV The 40th Anniversary commemorative expression. The standard From The Barrel blend, but with the cask marriage period doubled — up to six months in oak, twice the standard duration — allowing all 100+ malt and grain components to develop extraordinary depth, integration, and harmony. The result opens with honey, beeswax, tropical pineapple, and nutmeg, moves through candied lemon, a gentle elegant smoke, and rich earthiness on the palate, and finishes with layers of chocolate, orange peel, and mellow oak tannins. Presented in the original square bottle with a new silver label stamped with the words "Extra Marriage."

Critics Reviews

Whisky Advocate — #1 Whisky of the Year 2018 (Nikka From The Barrel standard expression)

The Whiskey Wash called Nikka From The Barrel "an icon of Japanese whiskey craftsmanship." Robb Report named it one of the best non-age-stated blends in the world. Gear Patrol described the gift set as "a brand portrait of the soul and spirit of this legend." No widely published numeric scores from major trade critics are available for the 40th Anniversary expressions specifically at this time, given the limited global distribution.

Tasting Profile — Three Bottles

Malt Pieces of the Barrel | 116 Proof

Nose Bold, peated, and powerfully structured. Intense malt and earthy peat lead — the Yoichi contribution unmistakable in its brooding, marine smoke character — followed by layers of ripe apricot, dried herbs, and a medicinal complexity that speaks to the heavily peated Yoichi whisky aged in new American oak. Dark fruit, spice, and a whisper of bitter chocolate add depth as the nose opens.

Palate Muscular and richly textured at 116 proof. The cask strength delivers the malt's full structural character: peat, smoke, and intense barley grain leading, giving way to herbal complexity, dark fruit, and the warm vanilla and cedar influence of American oak. The medicinal character that makes Yoichi so distinctive threads through the whole — iodine, sea air, and deep earthy rootedness alongside surprising bursts of fruit sweetness.

Finish Long, satisfying, and smoke-driven. The heavily peated component's influence lingers well into the close alongside dark fruit and a drying oak character that confirms this is the blend's structural backbone — bold, defining, and entirely dependent on its grain counterpart for balance.

Grain Pieces of the Barrel | 116 Proof

Nose The contrast with the Malt Pieces is immediately striking — softer, sweeter, and considerably more approachable despite matching the Malt at 116 proof. Banana cake and marmalade open with the warmth and sweetness of Nikka's Coffey grain distillate, followed by fresh vanilla, tropical fruit, and a light floral lift. Herbs and a hint of coconut add complexity alongside a barely detectable chili warmth that provides the grain's structural backbone.

Palate Creamy, round, and beautifully integrated — the Coffey still's unusually characterful grain spirit evident in a richness and complexity that standard column still grain whisky cannot match. Sweet fruit, vanilla cream, and fresh herbs lead the palate before corn and rye whisky add a warm, slightly spicy mid-palate note. The marmalade and banana quality is more pronounced here — the grain's American whiskey-adjacent character brought forward at cask strength.

Finish Clean, warm, and gently drying. The chili spice and herbal backbone carry the close alongside vanilla and light oak — the grain's contribution to the From The Barrel blend fully revealed: roundness, consistency, and the structural platform that allows the Malt's peat and smoke to shine without overwhelming.

Extra Marriage | 102.8 Proof

Nose The reunion of the two components — and the proof of their partnership. Honey, beeswax, and tropical pineapple open with warmth and generosity, followed by nutmeg, ginger, and the gentle elegant smoke that is From The Barrel's most recognizable aromatic signature. Rich earthiness and candied lemon thread beneath. Everything from both component bottles is present — integrated, harmonized, and elevated by the extended six-month marriage period into something greater than either could achieve alone.

Palate Rich, full-bodied, and multi-layered — the doubled marriage period evident in the seamless integration of flavors that, in the Malt and Grain bottles, were separate and distinct. Candied lemon and orange peel lead alongside chocolate and warm spice, with the peat and smoke of the Malt component arriving as a deep, supporting note rather than a dominant character. The grain's vanilla and fruit softness rounds and lifts the whole. Complex, vibrant, and impeccably balanced.

Finish Long, gently bitter, and deeply satisfying. Layers of chocolate, orange peel, and mellow oak tannin fade gradually and cleanly — the doubled marriage period producing a finish of unusual length, harmony, and integration that the standard From The Barrel, as exceptional as it is, cannot fully replicate.

Serving Occasion & How to Use This Set

The gift set is designed to be experienced as a sequential tasting journey — and that journey is the single most rewarding way to use it:

Step 1 — Malt Pieces of the Barrel: Pour neat in a Glencairn. Allow 10 minutes of air. Taste the smoke, peat, fruit, and structure that Yoichi and Miyagikyo contribute as isolated building blocks.

Step 2 — Grain Pieces of the Barrel: Pour neat in a clean Glencairn. Note the immediate contrast — the softness, sweetness, and roundness of the Coffey grain component that holds the blend together.

Step 3 — Extra Marriage: Pour neat and experience the two components united, extended, and harmonized. The doubled marriage period makes everything that was separate feel inevitable together.

This set is the definitive Japanese whisky gifting experience of 2025: a tasting masterclass, a collector's milestone, and an 800-set limited release that documents a legendary blend's 40-year history in three 500ml bottles.
