Jim Beam Black has been reintroduced with a genuine age statement — "Aged 7 Years" replacing the previous "Extra Aged" designation, alongside a proof bump from 86 to 90 and a full bottle redesign giving the brand a more premium look and feel. As Jim Beam's own copy puts it: "something magical happens to the whiskey in its seventh year in cask. We call it the sweet spot, where an easy smoothness meets notes of caramel, vanilla, and warm oak, and the liquid turns a rich gold." The brand has made "a firm commitment" to always age Jim Beam Black for those full seven years going forward.
Master Distiller Freddie Noe describes this release as an evolution of the classic Jim Beam formula, with deeper complexity and more barrel influence than either the entry-level White Label or the previous Beam Black. Whisky Advocate's own blind-tasting panel put that claim to the test directly, tasting all three side by side, and found the new 7-year bottling did indeed show "more complexity than the other two, with a stronger vanilla presence and notably smoother texture." This release is part of Beam Suntory's broader recent push toward older-aged expressions across the Jim Beam family, following the 2019 launch of Knob Creek 12 Year and subsequent 15 and 18-year Beam releases.
Reception among independent reviewers has been genuinely mixed, and worth sharing candidly. Christopher Null's review for Drinkhacker found real, immediate sweetness, with "brown sugar and some honey" popping "on a nose that's surprisingly dense," describing "bold breakfast cereal notes" that are "well-sweetened and well-spiced, touched with red pepper and cinnamon, later nutmeg," concluding it's "a versatile and well-rounded whiskey, inviting without being overly complex" and "for 20 bucks... definitely a solid upgrade over White Label." Bourbon Obsessed's tasting found "brown sugar, rye spices, caramel, mild vanilla, tart orange citrus and cinnamon" on the nose, with "intermittent hints of peanuts and cherries," the palate "fairly sweet at first, with simple syrup and light caramel," rounded out "by a bit of tang from orange citrus, black tea and mild char." Me, My Wife & Whisky's review found it "quite nutty up front — salted peanuts, a bit dry, with some dusty grains," alongside "a decent toasted oak note" and baking notes of "cinnamon, caramel, and bread crust," concluding "value is great — a 7 year age statement at this price point is a refreshing sight." Breaking Bourbon's review was considerably more critical, finding the bourbon "thin and watery" at 90 proof and lacking "any noticeable traits to stand out among its competition." This is genuinely accessible, budget-conscious bourbon — reception on whether the new age statement delivers real improvement honestly varies, though most reviewers agree it's a meaningful step up from the brand's entry-level offering.
Jim Beam Black Aged 7 Years Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is produced by James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky, under Master Distiller Freddie Noe. In early 2024, the brand reintroduced Jim Beam Black with a genuine 7-year age statement, replacing the previous "Extra Aged" (no age statement) designation, alongside a proof increase from 86 to 90 and a redesigned bottle. Bottled at 45% ABV / 90 proof, 750ml.
Whisky Advocate (blind panel tasting):
"Panelists, tasting blind as always, found the new version does indeed have more complexity than the other two [White Label and the previous Beam Black], with a stronger vanilla presence and notably smoother texture."
Christopher Null, Drinkhacker:
"There's an immediate sweetness that's evident in this 7 year old expression that I don't totally connote with White Label. Brown sugar and some honey pop on a nose that's surprisingly dense. Here, bold breakfast cereal notes are both well-sweetened and well-spiced, touched with red pepper and cinnamon, later nutmeg. All told it's a versatile and well-rounded whiskey, inviting without being overly complex. For 20 bucks it's definitely a solid upgrade over White Label and an immense value in the world of bourbon."
Bourbon Obsessed (extended independent review):
"Nose: Brown sugar, rye spices, caramel, mild vanilla, tart orange citrus and cinnamon; intermittent hints of peanuts and cherries. Taste: Simple syrup, light caramel, orange citrus and black tea; mild char, tannins and oak. Finish: Increasing white pepper spice, fairly dry with some tannins, black tea and barrel char. Pleasant warmth; fairly long."
Me, My Wife & Whisky (extended independent review):
"Nose: Quite nutty up front — salted peanuts, a bit dry, with some dusty grains. There's a decent toasted oak note, too, as well as baking notes of cinnamon, caramel, and bread crust; at one point, we found soft fruit undertones like orange. Value is great — a 7 year age statement at this price point is a refreshing thing to see from a big heritage distillery."
Breaking Bourbon (more critical review):
"Unfortunately, the re-addition of an age statement does little to elevate the final product. At 90 proof, the bourbon is thin and watery and lacks any noticeable traits to stand out among its competition."
Nose
Brown sugar and honey lead, joined by rye spice, caramel, and mild vanilla, alongside tart orange citrus, cinnamon, and a hint of roasted peanut.
Palate
Fairly sweet, with simple syrup and light caramel carrying the entry, developing orange citrus, black tea, mild char, and nutmeg, balanced by popcorn and dry oak.
Finish
Medium to fairly long, closing with white pepper spice, black tea, and barrel char, with a pleasant, moderate warmth.
