PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Since Batch #1 arrived in 2014, Kentucky Owl's numbered batch series has been one of the most reliably coveted limited releases in American whiskey — each bottling selling out faster than the last, each one a distinct snapshot of Master Blender John Rhea's evolving skill and the specific aged stocks available to him at that moment in time. Batch #12 is both a capstone and a statement: the culmination of the numbered batch program under Rhea's stewardship, and proof that a blender who spent four decades at Four Roses — rising to Chief Operating Officer and earning a place in the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame — knows precisely what he is doing when he assembles bourbon for a purpose.

The blend architecture is Kentucky Owl's most deliberately layered to date: younger 4-year-old bourbons contribute lively rye spice and fresh grain energy; mature 7 to 14-year stocks bring the depth, dried fruit complexity, and oak structure that only long Kentucky aging produces; and the interplay between them creates what Breaking Bourbon called "a quintessential bourbon through and through" — bold at 115.8 proof, balanced in character, and built on the philosophy that drove the original C.M. Dedman Distillery to call its bourbon "The Wise Man's Bourbon" over a century ago.

The name closes the circle. Batch #12 is not simply a batch number — it is the most recent chapter in a bourbon story that began in 1879 on the banks of the Kentucky River and has not stopped accumulating wisdom since.

Origins & Craftsmanship

The Kentucky Owl story begins with Charles Mortimer Dedman, a Bardstown pharmacist who received a parcel of land on the Kentucky River as a wedding gift from his adopted father — a local judge — and built the C.M. Dedman Distillery on that land in 1879, producing bourbon under Distilled Spirits Plant Designation No. 16, one of Kentucky's original DSP numbers. The distillery's product was known as "The Wise Man's Bourbon" — a name that carried through to the brand's modern revival and now appears on the Batch #12 label as both heritage reference and earned designation.

Dixon Dedman, C.M.'s great-great-grandson, revived the Kentucky Owl brand in 2014 — launching with a series of numbered, limited batches assembled from carefully sourced aged Kentucky bourbon stocks. Stoli Group acquired the brand in 2017 and brought in John Rhea — former Chief Operating Officer of Four Roses and a 40-year industry veteran inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame — as Master Blender, whose first task was to continue the numbered batch program with the same uncompromising approach that had established Kentucky Owl's reputation.

Batch #12 is assembled from a range of Kentucky straight bourbons spanning 4 to 14 years of age — the younger component bourbons aged 4 years providing vibrancy, rye spice, and fresh grain character, while the mature barrels spanning 7 to 14 years contribute the dried fruit complexity, deep caramelization, leather depth, and structural oak that define well-aged Kentucky bourbon. The mash bills of the component bourbons remain proprietary — consistent with Kentucky Owl's longstanding approach to blending transparency — but incorporate both rye and wheat-focused mash bills, adding textural diversity to the final blend. Rhea's stated goal for Batch #12 was to highlight the interplay between mature oak complexity and lively spice from the younger components — a tension that defines the best Kentucky blended bourbons and is most apparent at the bold 115.8 proof at which it is bottled. No chill filtration details are disclosed.

Critics Reviews

Breaking Bourbon described Kentucky Owl Batch #12 as "a quintessential bourbon through and through," praising the balance of sweetness and spice along with its robust proof structure. There are no widely published numeric scores from Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, or Whisky Advocate available for Batch #12 specifically. The Kentucky Owl numbered batch series as a whole has been consistently recognized by spirits media as among the most sought-after and consistently rewarding limited releases in the American whiskey category since Batch #1 in 2014.

Tasting Profile

Nose Sweet, complex, and immediately compelling at 115.8 proof — the concentration of the high-proof bottling evident in the density and richness of the aromatics without any heat on approach. Caramel and butterscotch lead confidently, followed by warm baking spice and smoked oak that root the nose firmly in Kentucky bourbon tradition. Brown sugar and a subtle white pepper note from the younger rye-forward components add energy and lift to the deeper aged character. Leather and a suggestion of dried tobacco emerge with air — the mature 14-year component making its presence known. A surprising and distinctive note of passionfruit threads through the whole, adding a tropical fruit dimension that elevates the nose well above the standard bourbon register. Vanilla and a whisper of dark chocolate complete the picture.

Palate Full-bodied, bold, and beautifully structured. The 115.8 proof delivers genuine intensity from the first sip — warm, commanding, and coating the entire palate — before the blend's balance asserts itself and the heat resolves into sustained warmth rather than aggression. Rye spice and dry oak arrive first, followed by a creamy wave of caramel, brown sugar, and passionfruit that adds an unexpected tropical sweetness to the mid-palate. Vanilla, butterscotch, and a thread of citrus weave through the center, while leather and aged oak add structural depth and savory complexity. The young and old component balance is most apparent here — the 4-year bourbon's lively grain energy cycling against the 14-year stock's deep, dried fruit maturity in a back-and-forth that keeps the palate engaged from entry to finish. Breaking Bourbon's description of "balanced mix of sweetness and savory bourbon character" is precisely accurate — this is a bourbon that holds competing forces in deliberate equilibrium.

Finish Long, lingering, and creamy. Cream and caramel lead the close, carrying warmth and sweetness well past the swallow alongside a thread of baking spice, leather, and toasted oak that dries gradually and cleanly. The passionfruit note that distinguished the nose returns faintly at the very end — an aromatic echo that gives the finish a final touch of unexpected elegance before fading. The finish is the Batch #12's clearest statement of John Rhea's blending mastery — resolved, deliberate, and wholly satisfying.

Serving & Occasion

Best enjoyed neat in a Glencairn or wide-bowled tulip glass with a minimum of 10 minutes of breathing time — at 115.8 proof the bourbon opens considerably with air, and the passionfruit, caramel, and leather notes reveal themselves gradually. A few drops of water will deepen the dried fruit and butterscotch character and soften the oak structure into something particularly refined — the high proof rewards careful dilution more than most bourbons. A single large ice cube works exceptionally well for a slow, contemplative pour where the blend's complexity can be fully explored across the glass's temperature change. Outstanding alongside dark chocolate, pecan pie, smoked meats, aged hard cheeses, and tobacco-accented cigars. An exceptional gifting bottle for serious bourbon collectors — the numbered batch series, Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame master blender pedigree, and high-proof limited release structure make it immediately recognizable to any enthusiast who follows the category.

Cocktail Suggestions

At 115.8 proof with a 14-year aged component contributing significant complexity, Batch #12 is primarily a premium neat sipper that rewards undivided attention. For those who prefer a spirit-forward cocktail that respects the whiskey:

Batch #12 Old Fashioned 2 oz Kentucky Owl Batch #12 · 1 tsp Demerara syrup · 2 dashes Angostura bitters · expressed orange peel. Stirred over a single large ice rock. The caramel, butterscotch, and rye spice character of Batch #12 aligns naturally with Demerara and Angostura — the orange peel amplifies the tropical fruit note already present on the nose — producing one of the most richly structured Old Fashioneds achievable from any batch bourbon at any proof.

Wise Man's Manhattan 2 oz Kentucky Owl Batch #12 · 1 oz Carpano Antica sweet vermouth · 2 dashes Angostura bitters · Luxardo cherry. Stirred over ice, served up in a chilled coupe. Carpano Antica's vanilla and spice richness meets 14 years of Kentucky oak head-on — the resulting Manhattan has genuine gravitas and depth, with the passionfruit note in the bourbon creating an unexpected and deeply rewarding counterpoint to the vermouth's dark sweetness.
