WhistlePig, better known for its rye whiskies, released The Badönkådonk as its 25-year single malt flagship—its oldest single malt to date. It begins life as a North American (likely Canadian) single malt aged for a quarter century in new American oak barrels. After primary maturation, it is finished in Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, imparting layers of Cabernet-driven character.
This is a single-barrel bottling, non-chill filtered, with no added color. The finishing with high-quality Cabernet wine casks speaks to an experimental blending of whiskey and wine barrel techniques, seeking to push the boundaries of what a North American single malt can express.
Nose: Deep and warming, with aromas of stone fruits (fig, plum), crème brûlée, and light butterscotch. Layers of oak spice, moldy earth, forest floor, and gentle tobacco emerge with time.
Palate: Rich and full-bodied. Cedar wood and dark red fruits (blackberry, cherry) elevate the wine influence, while honey, toffee, and butterscotch provide a silky core. Beneath lies malted grain, baking spices, and earthy woods.
