PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Château Lynch-Bages is world-renowned for the collectible, Cabernet-driven Pauillac red that made the estate's name — but tucked inside the portfolio of one of the Médoc's most beloved Fifth Growths sits something considerably rarer: a genuine white wine, made on the left bank in an appellation almost entirely defined by red. Blanc de Lynch-Bages was born in 1990, making it historically one of the very first white wines ever produced by a Grand Cru Classé estate in the Médoc — a category that essentially didn't exist until Jean-Michel Cazes decided it should.

The 2022 vintage arrived at the end of what the château itself calls "a year of torment, marked by extreme climatic phenomena" — yet the vines proved remarkably resilient, with every stage of the growing cycle running ahead of schedule right through to harvest, which began August 25th, the earliest ever recorded at the estate. The blend is 67% Sauvignon Blanc, 22% Sémillon, and 11% Muscadelle, sourced from eight parcels of the historic Lynch-Bages terroir on Garonne gravel. Approximately 75% of the juice ferments in individually temperature-controlled barrels — 65% new oak for this vintage — a technique specifically designed to preserve the wine's fresh aromatics throughout a process that could otherwise flatten them. The wine rests on its lees, stirred regularly, for six months before bottling.

Jane Anson awarded 94 Points: "vivid white flower aromatics, here the stone fruits are clearly ripe and edging towards exotic mango and pomegranate, with subtle gunsmoke edging and slate texture... gourmet, with the texture and flesh that is a signature of the vintage, but never less than enjoyable." James Suckling found "citrus, white flowers, mint, chalk and tomato leaf very nicely delineated," with the wine's freshness notable even fresh off the bottling line. Jeff Leve at The Wine Cellar Insider described "flowers, lemons, white peach, orange rind, white flowers and spice... bright, citrus, pear and green apple filled palate." Terrific perfume of honeyed lime, chalky minerality, medium body, and an exhilarating, persistent freshness — the kind of white Bordeaux that quietly proves a red-wine-obsessed estate can do genuinely serious things with Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle when it wants to.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Château Lynch-Bages sits at the gates of Pauillac, one of the most storied estates in the entire Médoc — classified a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, acquired by the Cazes family on the eve of the Second World War, and built into one of Bordeaux's most recognized names largely through the tireless advocacy of Jean-Michel Cazes. Blanc de Lynch-Bages was first released in 1990, one of the earliest white wine projects undertaken by any Grand Cru Classé property in the Médoc — a region whose reputation and classification system are built almost entirely around red wine. The wine is sourced from eight parcels of the estate's historic terroir, planted with the three traditional white grape varieties of the Bordeaux appellation: Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle.

Since 2006, an ongoing intra-parcel selection project has strengthened vine vitality and enhanced the wine's fruity and floral character, with careful attention paid to preventing berry oxidation before pressing in order to safeguard aromatics. Grapes are hand-picked and sorted directly in the vineyard, with successive passes through the vines ensuring each variety comes in exactly when ripe. Approximately 75% of the juice ferments in individually temperature-controlled barrels, preserving fresh aromatics throughout — for 2022, using 65% new oak. The wine is then stirred on its lees regularly and aged for six months before bottling, at a pH of 3.2. The 2020 vintage marked the first made in the estate's newly rebuilt facilities, designed by architect Chien Chung "Didi" Pei — son of the celebrated I.M. Pei — a 100% gravity-flow winery housing 80 stainless steel vats for precise, parcel-by-parcel vinification.

Critics Reviews

Jane Anson — 94 Points:
"Vivid white flower aromatics, here the stone fruits are clearly ripe and edging towards exotic mango and pomegranate, with subtle gunsmoke edging and slate texture. The team passed through the vineyard in successive times to ensure bunches came in as soon as they were ripe, and ensured reductive winemaking in individually temperature-controlled barrels to keep emphasis on fruit and aromatics. Harvest August 25 to 31, earliest ever. 3.2pH, 65% new oak. It's gourmet, with the texture and flesh that is a signature of the vintage, but never less than enjoyable."

James Suckling — 92 Points:
"The 2022 is bright and nicely focused, with tons of Sauvignon Blanc aromas and flavors driving the blend. Citrus, white flowers, mint, chalk and tomato leaf are very nicely delineated. It has just been bottled, but its freshness is notable."

Vinum Wine Magazine — 17/20

"Peach, apricot, pear and green apple combine with sweet tropical fruit touches lending both a freshness and rich, gourmet aspect to this wine. Succulent and energetic - a nice balance between opulence and liveliness. Still on the serious side but with subtle minerality and enjoyable florality. 3.20pH. Ageing six months, 50% new oak. The first time all the grapes were harvested in August (25-31). 3.2pH. 4.3 g/L total acidity. Aged 6 months in barrels on lees (50% new oak)." Decanter 92 Points

Château Lynch-Bages official (house style):
"On the palate, Blanc de Lynch-Bages is fresh with complex aromas of peach combined with white and exotic fruits. The mouth feel is round and fleshy with great aromatic persistence. Throughout its life it maintains an exhilarating freshness and a long finish, typical of the great white wines of Bordeaux."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Pale gold with green hues — the barrel fermentation and 65% new oak lending gentle warmth to an otherwise crisp, expressive color. Vivid white flowers open the nose, alongside ripe stone fruit edging toward exotic mango and pomegranate. Grapefruit, apple, and orchard fruits add layered citrus and orchard complexity, joined by a subtle gunsmoke edge and slate-like minerality. Lemons, white peach, and orange rind round out an aromatic profile of real generosity for such an early, cool-picked harvest.

Palate
Fresh, round, and fleshy — complex aromas of peach mingle with white and exotic fruit on a palate that carries genuine texture and flesh, a hallmark of the ripe 2022 vintage, while never losing its essential drinkability. Citrus, pear, and green apple carry bright fruit character, joined by lemon peel and Meyer lemon. Chalk, mint, and tomato leaf add the classic Sauvignon Blanc-driven herbal lift. The wine's minerality is pronounced throughout — a genuinely "classy effort," as one taster called it.

Finish
Exhilarating and persistent — a long, mineral-driven close typical of the finest white Bordeaux. Honeyed lime and chalky minerality linger, with the wine's freshness remaining notable even immediately post-bottling — a promising sign for its stated drinking window through 2032.
