PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Château Peyros 2018 Madiran is a compelling and well-crafted red from Southwest France that offers power and finesse in equal measure—a muscular Tannat-based blend with fresh dark-fruit energy, bold structure and an underlying brightness. It presents exceptional value for a wine of this pedigree and is ready to enjoy now, while also offering a few years of graceful evolution.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Hailing from the Madiran AOC in Gascony, the estate is run by the Lesgourgues family who have revitalised the vineyards since 1999. The 2018 vintage is drawn primarily from Tannat vines (the region's signature grape) blended with Cabernet Franc (and possibly other local grape varieties). The site employs sustainable practices (Terra Vitis and HVE certification) and viticulture focused on maintaining old-vine character, controlled yields and gentle extraction. In the cellar the wine is fermented with extended maceration and aged in French oak barrels (some portion new) to add structure but without overwhelming the fruit.
Critics Reviews
"The estate wine from this property in southern Madiran is a rich blend of Tannat and Cabernet Franc. Spice, blackberry fruits and acidity are well integrated into a ripe complexity. Drink the wine now." Wine Enthusiast 91 Points
One reviewer awarded it 93 points and remarked: “Dense, concentrated and structured… black fruits and dark chocolate give richness… drink from 2024.” Another noted its youthful fruit-driven depth, calling it “black-berry jam, wet earth and forest-under-brush” with firm tannins that hint at age-worthiness.
Tasting Profile
Nose: A deep garnet-ruby hue introduces aromas of ripe black cherry, blackberry compote, plum skin, and touches of dark cocoa and vanilla. Earthy undertones of forest floor, graphite and a subtle violet or wild herb lift provide complexity.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with a firm backbone. The bold fruit (blackcurrant, blueberry, black plum) leads, supported by fine grain dry tannins. Secondary notes of espresso, licorice root, leather and dark chocolate emerge, together with a refreshing acidity that keeps the wine lively.
Finish: Long and structured—the aftertaste offers return visits from dark fruit, peppery spice, mineral tension and a sustained tannic grip that promises further integration with time.
