PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

La Chablisienne is the only cooperative in Chablis, and it’s an important one. The first Chablis growers’ cooperative was founded on May 1, 1923, and the modern cooperative formed in 1947. It works with more than 250 grower-members, farming roughly a quarter of Chablis’ land, and as one of its leaders explained: “La Chablisienne is not a négociant, and never buys wines. We work only with the grapes of the Chablisienne producers.” Members can’t make their own wines if they belong, so the cooperative’s wines come entirely from member vineyards. The cooperative makes three Petit Chablis, five village Chablis, twelve Premier Crus, and six of the seven Grand Crus, and Jamie Goode wrote that he couldn’t “think of a coop doing a better job than this.”

Le Finage is the cooperative’s accessible village Chablis, from 100% Chardonnay grown on Chablis’ limestone and Kimmeridgian soils. The 2024 vintage was a challenging one: a cold, wet year with frost and hail that sharply reduced yields across Chablis, “yet it delivered wines of striking tension, crystalline minerality and laser-sharp acidity,” according to James Suckling’s report. The World of Fine Wine’s Sarah Marsh MW called it “a classic cooler vintage” in the region.

The producer describes a pale gold wine, “clear and bright with light golden highlights,” with an initial nose that is “discreet, with delicate notes of toast and roasted dried fruit.” It then “opens up to aromas of ripe white fruits (pear, peach) with, in the background, some hints of fresh almond and hazelnut.” The palate is “focused and pure with notes of lemon,” and “volume and sweetness appear mid-palate and complement this array of aromas with a lovely persistence on the finish.” A merchant noted “sweet spices (vanilla),” with “pear juice” appearing after opening, “slight vegetal and lemon hints,” “fresh with well balanced acidity,” and “simple and rich with great energy.” No critic scores are published for the 2024 Le Finage, but it’s a classic village Chablis: crisp, mineral, and food-friendly, as an aperitif, with oysters and sashimi, or with a platter of charcuterie.

Critics Reviews

No critic scores are published for the 2024 Le Finage.

James Suckling (2024 Chablis vintage report):
“The 2023 and 2024 vintages of Chablis tell two very different, almost opposite stories. While 2023 brought generous yields and wines marked by suppleness and easy charm, 2024 was defined by extreme adversity that decimated production — yet it delivered wines of striking tension, crystalline minerality and laser-sharp acidity.”

Sarah Marsh MW, World of Fine Wine (2024 Chablis report):
“A classic cooler vintage in the region.”

La Chablisienne (official tasting notes):
“Pale gold color, clear and bright with light golden highlights. The initial nose is discreet, with delicate notes of toast and roasted dried fruit. It then opens up to aromas of ripe white fruits (pear, peach) with, in the background, some hints of fresh almond and hazelnut. The palate is focused and pure with notes of lemon. Volume and sweetness appear mid-palate and complement this array of aromas with a lovely persistence on the finish.”

Merchant tasting note:
“Pale gold in color, the Le Finage Chablis is fairly discreet on the nose at first, revealing notes of sweet spices (vanilla). After opening, more fruity aromas appear (pear juice) with slight vegetal and lemon hints. The palate is fresh with well balanced acidity. The whole is simple and rich with great energy.”
