La Framboisière is one of the best-known red wines from the Côte Chalonnaise, and a point of pride for Domaine Faiveley. It has been one of the domaine’s monopoles since 1933, which means Faiveley is the sole owner of the vineyard, a 10.6-hectare plot close to the village of Fontaines, with soils of shallow, pebbly clay-limestone that drain well, and a lower slope of clay and silt that makes a cooler, more compact terroir. The name comes from the raspberry bushes that grew there, and the Mercurey vat house at Faiveley is named for it, too. As Faiveley puts it, the wines are known for “intense red fruit aromas and a pleasant minerality.”
The vines are farmed organically. For the 2023 vintage, 25% whole clusters were included in the fermentation, with the wine pumped over twice daily during a 15 to 19-day vatting, then pressed gently and aged 13 to 14 months in French oak barrels, 20% new. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir at 13.5% ABV. Bill Nanson of the Burgundy Report noted that “two parcels are practically north-facing that are very interesting in the hot years,” which helps the wine keep freshness.
The Wine Advocate’s review of the 2023: “Aromas of dark berries, orange zest, smoke and cloves introduce Faiveley’s 2023 Mercurey La Framboisière, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that’s succulent and charming, with good depth at the core and a fruity finish. As ever, it represents a terrific value.” The domaine’s tasting note: “The nose is powerful and fruity, combining rich red and black fruit with a subtle hint of oak. The palate is dominated by crunchy red fruit, supported by velvety tannins and a lively, mineral freshness. Medium-bodied and expressive, it shows both generosity and precision. The finish is long, fruit-driven and harmonious, capturing the distinctive character of this Mercurey monopole.” A retailer describes “a vibrant profile of raspberry, sour cherry, wild strawberry and subtle notes of damp earth, sweet spice and graphite,” with a palate that is “juicy, linear, with a lively acidity that adds tension and length.”
For house-style context, the 2022 earned praise: James Suckling (July 2024): “What a joyful red Burgundy. Full black and red raspberry fruit. Juicy and mouth-filling in spite of the lightness of touch, due to the lively acidity. Gentle tannins underline this beautifully. Fresh and lively finish.” Burghound named the 2022 a “Top Value”: “a ripe and very fresh nose speaks of crushed cherry, dark raspberry and a spicy top note... fleshy... clean, dry in the best sense, and lingering finish... one to look for as it offers fine value.” CellarTracker’s community averages 90.5 on the 2022.
It’s a juicy, fresh, fruit-driven Burgundy at a friendly price, a bottle that drinks well on release and over the next five to eight years. A natural pairing for roast poultry, pork, duck, charcuterie, mushroom tart, beef bourguignon, and soft cheeses. Serve it at 14-16°C (about 58-61°F).

James Suckling (2022 vintage; house-style context) — July 2024:
“What a joyful red Burgundy. Full black and red raspberry fruit. Juicy and mouth-filling in spite of the lightness of touch, due to the lively acidity. Gentle tannins underline this beautifully. Fresh and lively finish. From an 11-hectare monopole site. From organically grown grapes.”
Burghound (2022 vintage; house-style context) — Top Value:
“A ripe and very fresh nose speaks of crushed cherry, dark raspberry and a spicy top note. The vibrant and delicious middleweight flavors possess good volume... This is already drinking well though it has the density to repay mid-term keeping. This is one to look for as it offers fine value.”
