There aretwo conversations about Provence rosé.The first conversation isabout Whispering Angel, Rock Angel,Minuty, and the pale, delicate, immediately appealingstyle that has conquered global roséconsumption over the past twodecades — wines designed tobe beautiful andaccessible and entirely pleasurable, best in their youth, at their mostvivid when drunkchilled in the first one or two years. This is the most important roséconversation in the world right now andit deserves everyword written about it.
The secondconversation is about Bandol. And thesecond conversation isolder, quieter, and more specificallyabout what rosé actually iswhen pushed to its absolute limit.
Bandol is the only appellation inFrance whose regulations require aminimum of 50% Mourvèdre in roséproduction. Mourvèdre — thethick-skinned, late-ripening,structurally powerful grape varietythat produces Bandol's celebrated redwines — brings qualities to rosé thatthe lighter Grenache,Cinsault, and Syrah varieties ofCôtes de Provence cannot: weight, spice, tannin, a savorymineral complexity, and the ability toage in the bottle for five, ten, evenfifteen years while developing a depthand complexity that no Côtes deProvence rosé approaches. Bandol roséis the category's mostserious, most structured, and mostcellar-worthy expression. And ChâteauRomassan is Bandol rosé's mostcelebrated and most consistentlyreferenced benchmark.
Domaines Ottestablished Château Romassan in 1956 —a 148-acre estate at the foot of LeCastellet, among Bandol's most elevatedand most specifically terroir-definedvineyard sites, whose poor soils oflimestone, sandstone, and marine uppercretaceous marls combined with the seaair of the Bay of Bandol produce roséof unusual structural integrity. Theamphora-inspired bottle that makesevery Domaines Ott wine instantlyrecognizable has graced the finestrestaurant tables in the world sincethe 1930s — one of the first rosés everto appear on the menus of the finesthotels and restaurants globally.
The2024 received 94 Points from Vinous: "awine of supreme textural finesse andelegance — beautifully weighted, broadand nearly opulent, yet in no way heavy— drapes a blanket of floral-inflectedorchard fruit across the tongue —rosewater, orange confit and a tickleof sea salt last well after the winehas exited the stage. I wouldn'thesitate to age this Bandol for a fewyears to allow even further complexityto develop. Bravo." WineSpectator also awarded 94Points.
The Ottfamily arrived in Provence fromAlsace in 1896 and progressivelyassembled one of the region's mostdistinctive wine estates acrossthree properties: Château de Selle(Côtes de Provence, acquired1912), Clos Mireille (Côtes deProvence, 1930), and ChâteauRomassan (Bandol, 1956). In 2004,Louis Roederer — the prestigiousChampagne house whose portfolioincludes Cristal — acquiredDomaines Ott, with Christian andJean-François Ott continuingto lead production as family membersand shareholders.
Château Romassanoccupies 148 acres (70 hectares) at thefoot of Le Castellet on soils oflimestone, sandstone, and marine uppercretaceous marls — poor, arid terroirthat forces vine roots deep whileproducing the low yields ofconcentrated, intensely flavored fruitthat structured rosé requires. The seaair from the Bay of Bandol deposits thespecific saline maritime quality thatBandol wines carry as a housesignature. The vineyard's ancientterraced landscape, built from hardstone, gives each plot varyingexposures worked individually accordingto each parcel's intrinsic qualities.
The grape blend — Mourvèdre dominant, complemented by Grenache, Cinsault, andSyrah — is the Bandol AOC's mostspecifically distinguishing productionrequirement. Mourvèdre providessolidity, structure, and agingcapacity. Grenache adds full-bodiedtexture. Cinsault adds softness. Syrahadds fruity roundness. The wine ishand-harvested and sorted veryselectively, aged in oak, and presentedin the distinctive amphora-inspiredbottle designed by the Ott family andinspired by Roman amphorae found in theProvençal countryside.
Vinous — 94 Points (2024):
"The2024 Rosé Château Romassan is a wine ofsupreme textural finesse andelegance. Beautifully weighted, broadand nearly opulent, yet in no wayheavy, the 2024 drapes a blanketof floral-inflected orchard fruitacross the tongue, coating every cornerof the mouth through the long, focused finish. Rosewater, orangeconfit and a tickle of sea saltlast well after the wine has exitedthe stage. This is such an intentional Rosémade with the highest level ofcraftsmanship. I wouldn't hesitate toage this Bandol for a few years toallow even further complexity todevelop. Bravo."
Wine Spectator — 94 Points (2024):
"A sophisticated, polished Bandol, witha seductive, juicy palate that's allrounded off. Hums with vivid energybehind its notes of melon andgarrigue."

Nose
Pale, ethereal pink tinted with gold andcopper highlights — theMourvèdre's distinctivecontribution in a Bandol rosé ofunmistakable seriousness andstructure. The nose opens withcitrus fruits and white orchardflowers, the freshness of pinkgrapefruit and the delicacy ofwhite blossoms creating anaromatic picture of genuinerefinement before anythingdarker or more specificallyMourvèdre-driven arrives. Passionfruit adds tropicalvivacity. Melon adds broadlyappealing accessibility.Garrigue — the specificallyand unmistakablyProvençal aromatic of thyme, rosemary, and wild lavender —hums beneath the citrusand florals, the Bandolterroir's most enduringlyregional secondary quality. With breathing, hints offleshy fruit and fruit tartemerge progressively.
Palate
Supreme texturalfinesse — the most specificallyaccurate and the mostimmediately compelling 2024palate characterization.Lively and bright at entry, the citrus and freshfruit most immediatelypresent before theMourvèdre's structural weightbuilds: beautifullyweighted, broad, and nearlyopulent, yet in no way heavy— the most paradoxicaland the most accuratelyobserved description for a roséof this structure. Ablanket of floral-inflectedorchard fruit coats everycorner of the mouth. Pinkgrapefruit and vine peach carrythe mid-palate withvivid fruit forward.Mandarin adds the freshestcitrus secondary quality. Asubtle touch of Sichuan redpepper adds a memorablyunusual spice dimension. Softtannins confirm theMourvèdre's structuralcontribution without grip.
Finish
Long, focused, andsalt-touched. Rosewater andorange confit carry the close— delicate, slightlyfloral, and adding aspecifically elegant finaldimension. A tickle of sea saltlingers after the wine hasexited the stage, the Bay ofBandol's most enduringlycoastal contribution. Pomelopith adds clean, drycitrus. A persistent finishof licorice and spicecompletes the experience. Long, complex, and entirelyconfirming the Vinous reviewer'sjudgment that this wine rewardsseveral additional years ofcellaring.
