Glenfarclas is one of Scotland’s few remaining independent, family-owned distilleries, licensed since 1836 and owned by the Grant family since 1865, at the foot of Ben Rinnes in Ballindalloch, Speyside. It is famous for direct-fired copper pot stills, a rarity today, and for maturing its whisky in sherry casks, principally ex-Oloroso from Jerez. Whisky Magazine named the company Distiller of the Year in 2006, 2020, and 2023. The 25 Year Old is the pinnacle of that sherry-driven house style: a quarter century of maturation, bottled at 43% ABV, built for slow, neat sipping.
The tasting notes read like a dessert menu. The nose opens with “sweet sherry, orange peel, honeyed malt, and hints of roasted nuts and cocoa,” and the palate is “rich and velvety with layers of dried fruits, dark chocolate, coffee, and oak spice,” finishing “long, warming, and elegant with notes of nutmeg, toffee, and gentle wood tannins.” Another description finds “deep sultana, dried fig, dark chocolate, Christmas cake, and layers of oloroso-sherry-derived sweetness,” carried by “a long, warming oak finish with soft cigar-box spice,” and “so rich it can substitute for a dessert course.”
Whisky Advocate’s David Fleming described a more nuanced profile: “Earthy notes of dried leaves, wet wool, and a hint of maltiness start things off on the nose, then citrus and red apple. The palate is sweet and balanced, offering warm apple tart, cinnamon, cooked blueberries, raisins, toffee, and Christmas cake, with a slight and appealing hint of soapiness. A lengthy finish brings chocolate cake, glazed orange, pfeffernusse cookies, and winter spice. A delicious holiday warmer.” A Whiskybase expert scored it 89 and found the nose “incredibly complex and changing with every breath,” while feeling the palate and finish couldn’t quite keep up with that level, a candid note some other reviewers share when comparing it with other high-end whiskies. Whisky Connosr’s community called it “a beautiful interplay of fruit and oak,” and many buyers point to its value: a 25-year-old sherried single malt at a price that other distilleries charge for far younger whiskies. It’s a traditional, richly sherried, gentle whisky that makes a strong milestone gift, a retirement gift, or a special-occasion bottle.
Glenfarclas 25 Year Old is produced at the Glenfarclas Distillery in Ballindalloch, Speyside, Scotland, licensed since 1836 and owned by the Grant family since 1865. It is made from malted barley in direct-fired copper pot stills and matured 25 years in sherry casks, principally ex-Oloroso from Jerez. Bottled at 43% ABV / 86 proof, 750ml.

Whiskybase expert (Gloin) — 89 Points (July 2023):
“The smell is incredibly complex and changes with every breath, very exciting, always pleasant. Great! The taste can’t quite keep up this very high level, less complex but still exciting and tasty. The finish is classic, but lacks some complexity... Nevertheless, I like the whisky very much.”
Whisky Connosr community:
“This is a beautiful dram... the 25 Year Old is a beautiful interplay of fruit and oak. Creamy vanilla sherry notes with some soft white pepper and delicate powdered ginger. There’s also some green apple and pear notes with a dark, bitter chocolate in the background.”
