Luigi Einaudi planted his first vines in Dogliani in 1897 with a simple conviction: that the hillsides of the Langhe produced the finest grapes in the world and that a serious man's most important legacy could be rooted in them. He was right about the grapes. He also turned out to be right about a great many other things — in 1948, following the establishment of the Italian Republic and the writing of its Constitution, Luigi Einaudi became the first President of Italy. The estate that bears his name has been making wine continuously through all of it — the founding, the fascism, the liberation, the republic, the economic miracle, and the Italian wine renaissance — and today, under the stewardship of his great-grandson Matteo Sardagna Einaudi, Poderi Luigi Einaudi produces wines that wine writers have called "technically flawless but emotionally resonant."
The Langhe Nebbiolo DOC is the most accessible expression in the Einaudi range and the most direct introduction to what this estate and this grape can achieve — the "entry point" to an estate whose Barolos from Cannubi, Villero, Bussia, and Monvigliero rank among the most celebrated wines in Piedmont. Sourced from the youngest Nebbiolo vineyards in Neive — the very first Nebbiolo parcels Luigi Einaudi acquired — the wine is fermented entirely in stainless steel and aged twelve months in stainless steel before two months in bottle, a deliberately fruit-forward approach that preserves the electric primary character of the Nebbiolo grape without the weight of barrel aging that the Barolo program demands.
The 2022 vintage was defined by heat and drought — conditions that produced small berries across Piedmont, concentrating the skin-to-juice ratio into something with what the estate's own team called "incredible structural integrity and aromatic intensity." James Suckling found an "inviting nose of plums, sour cherries, oranges, tobacco and tar — firm and well-framed, yet the tannins melt into the fruit. Medium- to full-bodied, lengthy and delicious." Wine Enthusiast noted "sweet and savory spices such as clove and anise." CellarTracker's community awards it 92 points, with reviewers calling it "beautiful garnet, highly aromatic with florals and red berry on the nose — high toned, bright red fruit on the palate, floral, herbal elements, nice acidity and firm tannic structure. Really pretty and quite elegant." This is Nebbiolo as it should be — serious, perfumed, complete, and genuinely impressive for the price.
Poderi Luigi Einaudi was founded in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi in Dogliani, in the Langhe hills of Piedmont — a man who would go on to become Italy's first President in 1948, whose conviction that the Langhe produced the world's finest grapes preceded his political career by half a century. The estate today spans 150 hectares of land across 13 farmhouses, with 70 hectares under vine spread across some of the most historically recognized crus in the Langhe region, including Grand Cru sites in Barolo at Cannubi, Villero, Bussia, and Monvigliero. Current steward Matteo Sardagna Einaudi — Luigi's great-grandson — leads the estate with a focus on preserving freshness and primary character, recently refining the oak program to keep the "electric pulse of the Nebbiolo grape" vibrating in the bottle for decades.
The Langhe Nebbiolo DOC is sourced from the youngest Nebbiolo vineyards on the estate, located in Neive — the very first Nebbiolo parcels Luigi Einaudi acquired, situated on the hills running from Dogliani toward Barbaresco on calcareous marl soils with south and southeastern exposure. The wine is fermented entirely in stainless steel, drawn off after four to five days, then aged twelve months in stainless steel and two months in bottle — a production approach deliberately chosen to preserve the grape's most direct, most fruit-forward, and most immediately accessible expression, in contrast to the extended barrel aging and maceration that the estate's Barolo program requires. The 2022 vintage produced small berries from the heat and drought conditions, with a concentrated skin-to-juice ratio that gave the wine exceptional structural integrity for its category. Production: 73,000 bottles.
James Suckling — 91 Points (2022):
"Inviting nose of plums, sour cherries, oranges, tobacco and tar. Firm and well-framed, yet the tannins melt into the fruit. Medium- to full-bodied, lengthy and delicious. Drink or hold."
Wine Enthusiast — 89 Points (2022):
"Sweet and savory spices such as clove, anise and savory spices open up the nose of this classic Nebbiolo."
CellarTracker Community Score — 92 (2022)
CellarTracker community (confirmed 2022 tasting notes):
"Beautiful garnet color, highly aromatic with florals and red berry on the nose. High toned, bright red fruit on the palate, floral, herbal elements, nice acidity and firm tannic structure. Really pretty and quite elegant. First time with this producer and wine, but quite impressed and seeking out more. Strong QPR."
"Pinot-like colour and weight. Rose and cherry nose and palate at first. Fresh acid and firm Nebbiolo tannins but not aggressive. Lovely drinking and seems like a great value option while waiting for Barolos to mature."
"Darker Nebbiolo fruit, rose petals. Palate is deep and intense without any real hard edges."
Empson & Co. (US importer, confirmed):
"An elegant fruit-forward and flavorful Nebbiolo with a full body, wonderful even young."
Nose
Beautiful garnet color, highly aromatic from the first pour. Plums and sour cherries lead with vivid, bright red-fruit intensity. Oranges add a fresh citrus secondary note — the most specifically lively and the most immediately arresting component of the aromatic profile. Tobacco and tar add the most classically Nebbiolo-specific and the most savory secondary character. Rose petals and violet florals add a delicate, perfumed lift characteristic of the variety and the Neive terroir. Clove, anise, and warm spice round out the nose with sweet and savory aromatic depth.
Palate
High-toned and bright, with firm but well-framed tannins that melt into the fruit — the most specifically notable and the most reassuring palate quality for Nebbiolo at this price point. Medium- to full-bodied, with red fruit and florals carrying through from nose to palate. Herbal elements add complexity. Fresh, bright acidity provides the structural backbone that makes this wine "a great value option while waiting for Barolos to mature," as one CellarTracker reviewer specifically observed.
Finish
Lengthy and delicious, with tobacco, spice, and dried fruit lingering alongside the cherry and violet character. The firm Nebbiolo tannins provide genuine cellaring potential, while the wine's fundamental accessibility and elegance make it equally rewarding drinking now. Serve at 18-20°C.
