PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Travaglini is genuinely the defining name of Gattinara — the largest vineyard owner and foremost producer in this northern Piedmont appellation, farming 59 hectares that represent nearly 59% of the entire Gattinara DOCG, and the #1 selling Gattinara in the world. The family has owned land here since the early 19th century, though it was Giancarlo Travaglini, the third generation, who formally established the eponymous estate winery in 1958; today it's run by fourth-generation Cinzia Travaglini alongside her husband and chief winemaker, Massimo Collauto, with a fifth generation already learning the craft.
Gattinara itself is genuinely one of Italian viticulture's great comeback stories — a winemaking region actually older than Barolo, covering nearly 600 hectares by the late 1800s and ranking among the largest in Northern Europe, before phylloxera and a devastating 1905 hailstorm essentially wiped the region out, leaving it nearly forgotten for decades. The vineyards sit at the foot of Monte Rosa on genuinely unique volcanic soils, rich in iron, porphyry, and granite — the only place in the world where Nebbiolo grows on exactly this combination of terroir, giving Gattinara's wines a real mineral tension distinct from the Langhe's more famous Barolo and Barbaresco.
Wine Spectator awarded a genuine 91 Points, describing the wine as "bright, with a crisp edge to its tart cherry, strawberry, rose hip and mineral flavors," the "chalky tannins" "present but integrated," closing with "a lingering, iron-tinged aftertaste." Antonio Galloni called it "such a classy, polished wine," noting "sweet macerated cherry, pine, blood orange, spice and new leather are all lifted in the glass," with "silky tannins" wrapping "it all up in style," calling it "a very sexy wine from Travaglini" where "all the elements are so well balanced." The wine ages a full 36 months, 24 of them in Slavonian oak — genuinely patient, traditional maturation. This is genuinely classic, mineral-driven Piedmontese Nebbiolo — real, distinctive terroir from a region that very nearly disappeared entirely, brought back by one family's own multi-generational dedication.
Travaglini 2022 Gattinara is produced by the Travaglini family, the largest vineyard owner in the Gattinara DOCG and the #1 selling Gattinara producer in the world, farming 59 hectares that represent nearly 59% of the entire appellation. The estate was formally established in 1958 by third-generation Giancarlo Travaglini, and is now run by fourth-generation Cinzia Travaglini and her husband, chief winemaker Massimo Collauto.
Made entirely from Nebbiolo, sourced from vineyards at the foot of Monte Rosa on volcanic soils rich in porphyry, granite, and iron — a genuinely unique terroir found nowhere else Nebbiolo is grown. Natural fermentation is followed by 36 months of aging, including 24 months in Slavonian oak, plus further time in bottle. Bottled at 13.5% ABV, 750ml.
Wine Spectator — 91 Points:
"This is bright, with a crisp edge to its tart cherry, strawberry, rose hip and mineral flavors. Chalky tannins are present but integrated, with a lingering, iron-tinged aftertaste."
Antonio Galloni:
"Travaglini's 2022 Gattinara is such a classy, polished wine. Sweet macerated cherry, pine, blood orange, spice and new leather are all lifted in the glass. Silky tannins wrap it all up in style. This is a very sexy wine from Travaglini. All the elements are so well balanced."
Travaglini (official tasting note):
"Soft floral aromas, from violets to rose petals, taking on spicy and balsamic notes over time. Its finish offers hints of minerals and iron at times. Elegant with a balance between freshness, barely outlined noble tannins and a subtle, infinite persistence of small red fruits, flowers and fruit jellies."
Antonio's Wine (extended tasting note):
"On the nose, elegant aromas of violet, rose petals, red cherries, and subtle spice notes unfold, accompanied by mineral and slightly ferrous nuances."
Nose
Bright garnet red with delicate transparency. Violet and rose petal lead, joined by tart cherry and strawberry, alongside subtle spice and mineral, iron-tinged nuance.
Palate
Crisp and structured, with sweet macerated cherry, blood orange, and rose hip carrying real freshness, developing spice, pine, and new leather, framed by chalky yet integrated, silky tannin.
Finish
Lingering and iron-tinged, closing with genuine mineral persistence — classy, polished, and well-balanced.
