PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Open is golf’s oldest championship, first played in 1860 at Prestwick, and its 150th edition in 2022 returned to the Old Course at St. Andrews, the “Home of Golf.” To mark the occasion, Loch Lomond, the official whisky partner of The Open, released a special edition developed by its master blender, Michael Henry, with its golf ambassador, Colin Montgomerie, the Scottish Ryder Cup captain and Open veteran. It’s presented as “The Spirit of The Open,” and the carton carries Montgomerie’s signature.

The whisky is a Highland single malt from the Loch Lomond Distillery in Alexandria, which is one of the few Scottish distilleries to make both malt and grain whisky on site, using traditional pot stills and its unusual lomond stills. It was matured in American oak casks and then finished in Claret red wine casks from Bordeaux, and bottled without chill filtration at 46% ABV (92 proof). Loch Lomond’s house style, in the distillery’s words, is “fruit, honey and soft smoke,” and the Claret finish pushes it toward red fruit and gentle spice.

The tasting notes describe a nose that is “fresh and fruity, with peach, pear and red apples, supported by rose floral notes,” a palate with “a burst of strawberry, peach and lime citrus leading into creamy fudge and light biscuit sweetness,” and a finish that is “long, with lingering oak spice and soft smoke.” Dramface scored the Open Special Editions (the 2020, 2021, and 2022 releases) 8/10, describing a “unique and moreish fruit and fizz bomb,” with a “bright and fizzy” character and an “effervescent texture.” It’s a lively, fruity, easy-drinking malt, with a pleasant touch of red-wine character that makes it a good fit for customers who like softer, fruit-forward whisky.

It’s a commemorative bottle, tied to one of golf’s biggest moments, and an easy gift for golfers, Open fans, and collectors of golf-themed whiskies. It also sits well with your Penelope Architects of Golf set for a golf display.
