The newest American single malts are the ones that look most like Scotch’s old model: a distillery that makes the whole thing on one site. That’s the idea behind Minden Mill, in Minden, Nevada, where the barley is grown, malted, distilled, aged, and bottled on a single estate, the first time a single-estate American single malt has been produced at this scale in the Nevada high desert. The estate’s philosophy, as one of the distillers explains, is that “the subtle exploration of flavor based on regional differences is what made Scotch whisky so compelling to consumers, and we can replicate that experience in Minden with American Single Malt.”
The whiskey is made from 100% estate-grown barley, malted on site, and distilled in dual all-copper Forsyth stills hammered by hand in Speyside, Scotland, which are two of only a few in the US. It’s then aged five years in a climate-controlled rickhouse in the high desert, in a system of Oloroso sherry casks, ex-bourbon barrels, and American oak, including re-charred wine and sherry butts, and bottled non-chill filtered at 94 proof (47% ABV). It’s one of the first American single malts to be released since the 2025 TTB ruling that established official standards for the category, in which Minden Mill’s distiller was involved as a member of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission.
The tasting notes describe aromas of “fig, caramel, golden raisin, candied plum, and honeycomb on the nose, complemented by notes of almond and light tobacco leaf.” The palate “features rich caramel and dried cherry notes that mingle with fruit compote, honey, and sweet malt, finishing with a luxurious mouthfeel and notes of cherry tobacco and light nutmeg allspice.” The distillery’s own shorthand is “notes of stone fruit and almond with a long, evolving finish.” Bourbon Obsessed found “sweet and fruit forward” aromas of “pears, sweet ripe peaches, tangerines, honey, and mild maltiness,” a palate of “sugary simple syrup and honey sweetness, sweet pears, and tangerines,” and a finish of “tangerines and mild white pepper spice,” increasingly dry and long. As the reviewer concluded, “fruits dominate this flavor profile, different from many other American Single Malts that I have tried, which tend to be very grain forward.”
At five years old, it has the freshness of a younger malt with the richness of sherry casks, and it’s a fruit-driven, easy-drinking single malt at a friendly price. It’s a good recommendation for Scotch drinkers who want to try American single malt, and for single malt fans who value the single-estate story. Sip it neat, or over a single large ice cube.
