PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Octomore accounts for just 5% of everything Bruichladdich produces, and it sells out almost as soon as it's released — a genuine cult phenomenon built entirely around a single, deliberately provocative idea: take Islay barley peated to levels that would have been unthinkable when Octomore first appeared, distill it, age it for only five years, and bottle it close to cask strength. The name itself is a resurrection — Octomore was a separate, standalone distillery on Islay from 1816 until it closed in 1852, and Bruichladdich revived the name specifically for this experimental, super-heavily peated variant of its own production when the range first launched in the early 2000s. The very first Octomore malting run measured 80 ppm — a genuinely groundbreaking number at the time, well beyond anything Lagavulin or Ardbeg were claiming, and it instantly made Octomore the most heavily peated whisky in the world.

15.2 is Series 15's direct comparison expression to its sibling 15.1 — distilled from the exact same batch of Scottish-grown Concerto barley, malted to the identical 108.2 PPM phenol level, but sent down an entirely different maturation path. Where 15.1 rested in straightforward first-fill and re-charred ex-bourbon casks, 15.2 was originally filled into second-fill wine casks and second-fill bourbon casks before a finishing period in first-fill Cognac casks — a genuine trifecta of American oak, red wine, and French ex-Cognac influence that Bruichladdich describes as adding real layers of intrigue to the finished spirit. Distilled in 2018 from barley harvested on the Scottish mainland in 2017, the whisky spent its full five years developing that combination before bottling at 57.9% ABV.

The tasting notes describe sweet citrus, lime zest, and lemon meringue pie opening the nose, followed by toasted oak and a hint of earthy smoke, with a medley of tropical fruit enhancing the whisky's vibrancy against woody spices, smoked honey, toasted bread, and roasted coffee. On the palate: a viscous, sumptuously smooth spirit bringing vanilla custard, caramel, toffee, and a crack of black pepper, with charred oak, cinnamon, and nutmeg adding depth as pear drops and dried apricot cut through Octomore's inimitable peat smoke. Whisky writer and Keeper of the Quaich AD, tasting 15.2 alongside its siblings at a Bruichladdich event, offered a genuinely candid take: the Cognac cask maturation imparted real tannin and a touch of bitterness that didn't entirely gel with his own palate — though he noted his colleagues at the same tasting voted it their outright favorite of the series. That kind of split reaction is, in many ways, exactly the point of Octomore: a whisky built specifically to provoke a reaction, one way or the other, rather than settle safely into the middle.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Bruichladdich Distillery was founded in 1881 on Islay, a genuinely Victorian-era operation that still uses much of its original 19th-century equipment — flywheels, belts, malt elevators, and a raked mashtun that continue to function largely as they did nearly a century and a half ago. Following a change of ownership in the 1960s, Bruichladdich made the unusual decision to produce an entirely unpeated malt as its core expression, a choice that set it apart from virtually every other distillery on an island famous for smoke. Octomore itself takes its name from a separate distillery that operated on Islay from 1816 to 1852; Bruichladdich revived the name for its own super-heavily peated experimental range, alongside the moderately peated Port Charlotte, adding both variants to its production in the early 2000s. The very first Octomore malting run reached 80 ppm — a genuinely unprecedented figure at the time that immediately established Octomore as the most heavily peated whisky in the world, a title it has held and repeatedly extended ever since.

Series 15's 15.2 expression is distilled from the same batch of 100% Scottish Mainland Concerto barley used for 15.1, malted to an identical 108.2 PPM phenol level — the series' built-in methodology of using matched barley across the .1 and .2 expressions specifically to isolate and highlight the influence of cask alone. The spirit was distilled in 2018 from barley harvested on the Scottish mainland in 2017, and matured across a genuine trifecta of cooperage: originally filled into second-fill wine casks and second-fill bourbon casks, then finished in first-fill Cognac casks sourced from France. This combination of American oak, red wine, and French ex-Cognac influence was specifically chosen to add layered complexity and elegance to the finished spirit. Bottled at 57.9% ABV / 115.8 proof after five full years of maturation. Octomore represents just 5% of Bruichladdich's total annual production, making every release genuinely scarce.

Critics Reviews

AD, Whisky and Wisdom (professional tasting note, event review):
"15.2 has been matured in ex-Cognac casks and bottled at 57.9% ABV. For me, this imparted some tannins to the spirit, but also a mild bitterness. Yes, extremely complex, but with a flavour profile that I confess didn't entirely gel with me. Such judgements are, of course, entirely individual and subjective — my colleagues sitting alongside me at the event voted this their favourite."

Bruichladdich official tasting notes:
"Octomore 15.2 offers an intriguing and inviting comparison to its 15.1 counterpart. Distilled from the same batch of Scottish grown barley and also malted to 108.2 PPM, the 15.2 uses a robust combination of second fill wine and second fill bourbon casks, with the spirit finished in first fill Cognac casks. This unique trifecta adds layers of intrigue, resulting in a complex yet exceedingly elegant single malt Scotch whisky. Hints of nutmeg, toasted oak and caramel add smoothness to the palate, with the delicate floral character of Octomore coming to the fore."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Sweet citrus, lime zest, and lemon meringue pie open immediately, followed by toasted oak and a hint of earthy smoke. A medley of tropical fruit enhances the whisky's vibrancy, balanced with woody spices, smoked honey, toasted bread, and roasted coffee.

Palate
Viscous and sumptuously smooth, bringing vanilla custard, caramel, and toffee alongside a crack of black pepper. Charred oak, cinnamon, and a hint of nutmeg add real depth, while pear drops and dried apricot cut cleanly through Octomore's characteristic peat smoke. The Cognac cask finish contributes genuine tannin and structure — a quality some tasters find adds elegance, others find slightly more assertive than expected.

Finish
An unmistakable maritime quality lands on the finish, with waves of salt spray settling on the palate while peat embers linger. Long and smoky, with the tannin from the Cognac cask finish carrying a mild, deliberate bitterness through the close.
