"12 e Mezzo" — Italian for "12 and a half" — takes its name directly from a genuine point of pride: a deliberately lower 12.5% ABV, announced right on the label, at a time when many Primitivo wines push well past 14%. The wine comes from Varvaglione, a family estate in Puglia producing this particular Primitivo "12 e Mezzo" Salento IGP for over 15 years, now guided by the current generation of the Varvaglione family — Marzia, Angelo, and Francesca, all under 30, who deliberately pushed the wine toward a fresher, easier-drinking, "non-jammy style," while also redesigning the labels, drawing on backgrounds in the fashion industry before returning home to run the family estate.
Primitivo itself carries genuine international pedigree — the same grape genetically linked to California Zinfandel and Croatia's Crljenak Kaštelanski, here expressed through Salento's own sun-soaked terroir in southern Puglia. The 2023 vintage ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel before a few months aging in American oak barriques, adding real vanilla and roasted character without masking the fruit.
James Suckling scored the wine 88-89 Points across tastings. Falstaff's Othmar Kiem and Simon Staffler scored the wine 89 Points, describing "dark ruby with garnet reflections," an "intense nose with notes of dark fruit, tar and eucalyptus," noting the fruit "isn't as present on the palate," which is "pleasantly fresh but slightly bold tannins." BroadwayWorld's tasting describes a "deep garnet hue and velvety mouthfeel" carrying "an intoxicating blend of ripe plums and cocoa, accompanied by subtle hints of vanilla and spice," with "full body and smooth tannins." Taylor's Wine Shop's tasting confirms the wine opens "with a ruby-red hue and aromas of ripe plums, cherry jam, and cocoa, accented by a gentle touch of spice that adds warmth and depth," the palate "soft and rounded," offering "juicy red and dark fruit flavors," the finish "supple and easygoing, with lingering notes of ripe berries and a hint of chocolate." This is genuinely approachable, well-reviewed Primitivo — real Salento character at a comfortably lower strength than the variety typically delivers.
