Pêche de vigne, the “vineyard peach,” is one of Burgundy’s nicest little secrets. These heirloom peaches have fuzzy skin and often reddish flesh, and traditionally they were planted at the ends of the vine rows, where they would show disease before the grapevines did. There may be as many as 120 varieties of these bush peaches grown across Burgundy and the northern Rhône. They are often shrubby little runts that yield intensely perfumed fruit, which bruises easily and loses its charm quickly. The key is to get the fruit into the maceration vessel fast to “fix” its fabulous flavors and aromas. Among the varieties used here are the prized Charles Ingouf and Belle Angevine.
Mathieu Paquet is a Mâcon native and the scion of a wine-making family. In 2018, a friend put a bottle of crème de cassis in his hands that “exploded what he thought he knew” about the traditional Burgundian liqueur, and he went on to build this small line of Burgundian fruit liqueurs, which includes crème de cassis, crème de framboise, and this crème de pêche de vigne. As the importer’s note puts it, crème liqueurs “are easy to make, but hard to get right: sugar is sugar, alcohol is alcohol, but fruit is not fruit.”
The importer describes a liqueur with “a beautiful golden-orange and lustrous color,” a nose that is “very aromatic with that heady scent that practically shouts, ‘Summer!’,” and a palate where “the fruit explodes, powerful, rich, and without heaviness and just a slight tannic touch giving it fine definition.” Another tasting note finds “an explosion of peach flavor that feels fresh and ripe,” with “sweetness perfectly balanced by a slight acidity, keeping the liqueur from becoming cloying.” Others describe “a creamy, smooth texture and a hint of almond-like undertones,” and a “pleasantly sweet and long-lasting aftertaste.” At 18% ABV (36 proof), it’s a lower-proof liqueur that works neat, in a spritz, or in a cocktail, and a more flavorful, less sugary alternative to most commercial peach liqueurs.
Mathieu Paquet Crème de Pêche is a Burgundian fruit liqueur from Mathieu Paquet’s line “Liqueurs des Petits Fruits de Bourgogne,” made by macerating pêche de vigne, heirloom vineyard peaches grown in Burgundy and the northern Rhône, including the varieties Charles Ingouf and Belle Angevine. The fruit is picked and macerated quickly to preserve its aromatics. Bottled at 18% ABV / 36 proof, 700ml.
