PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In 1929, a 25-year-old Spaniard named Julian Barceló arrived in Santo Domingo with a single, genuinely ambitious goal: to make the finest rum in the world. It took him more than two decades of experimentation before Barceló Blanco and Dorado launched in 1950 to immediate national success, and the company he founded has since grown into Ron Barcelo SRL, distributed in more than 50 countries and ranked the fourth-largest rum exporter on Earth. Somewhere along that journey, the house created Barceló Imperial — the flagship expression that has carried the family's original ambition forward for the better part of a century. This bottle marks its 40th anniversary: a limited-edition, hand-numbered celebration of four decades spent perfecting a single, singular rum.

Ron Barceló Imperial Premium Blend 40 Aniversario is built from the house's own aged reserves, 8 to 10 years old, matured first in American oak barrels — many of them ex-bourbon casks with varying degrees of toast — before undergoing a further refinement in French oak barrels that previously held Sauternes, France's celebrated sweet Bordeaux wine. From there, select reserves rest still further in European vats, a genuinely layered, multi-stage aging journey that produces the deep coppery-brown, chestnut-hued color this expression is known for — noticeably darker than the house's earlier 30th Anniversary release. Bottled at 43% ABV in a striking collector's presentation, complete with a heavy, cork-topped metal stopper that makes the bottle a genuine centerpiece even before it's opened.

The result is a rum of real complexity and considerable depth. Tastings.com, the review platform run by the Beverage Testing Institute, described "buttery aromas and flavors of butterscotch, cola nut, brown butter maple baked apple, and right out of the oven raisin date muffin," carried on "a creamy, vibrant, off-dry medium-full body" with "a warming, epic, long finish with notes of roasted apricot, marzipan, banana, and allspice" — calling it "a world class rum that is a symphony of maple, spice, sun-ripened fruit and pastry shop flavors, all with a wisp of smoke." The house's own tasting notes promise "harmonious hints of crème brûlée, caramelized raisins, exquisite dried spices, and dried cherries," a smooth, semi-dry entry with layered nutty spice, closing on "a long aftertaste of pepper leaf and elegant tobacco." One RumRatings devotee, calling it simply the best rum Barceló has ever produced, paired it with a Trinidad Media Luna cigar and an Oktoberfest bier chaser — a fitting way to celebrate forty years of ambition Julian Barceló set in motion nearly a century ago.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Ron Barceló traces its origins to 1929, when 25-year-old Spanish entrepreneur Julian Barceló moved to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with the ambition of producing the world's finest rum. After years of experimentation, the company achieved its breakthrough in 1950 with the launch of Barceló Blanco and Dorado, an immediate commercial success that established the house permanently in the Dominican rum industry. Today, operating as Ron Barcelo SRL from its distillery in San Pedro de Macorís, the company distributes across more than 50 countries and ranks as the world's fourth-largest rum exporter.

Barceló Imperial Premium Blend 40 Aniversario celebrates the 40th anniversary of the house's flagship Imperial expression through a special blend drawn from Barceló's own aged reserves — rum matured 8 to 10 years in selected cuts of American oak barrels, many previously used for bourbon, with varying degrees of toast applied to the wood. This base is subsequently refined for approximately two additional years in French oak barrels that formerly held Sauternes, the celebrated sweet Bordeaux dessert wine, before select reserves undergo a final period of rest in European vats. This multi-stage, cross-continental aging process is designed to build genuine layered complexity: the American oak contributing classic caramel and vanilla warmth, the French Sauternes casks lending fruit-forward sweetness and refined spice, and the final vat rest allowing full integration. The finished rum is bottled in a limited, hand-numbered edition at 43% ABV, presented in a distinctive collector's bottle with a substantial cork-and-metal stopper.

Critics Reviews

Tastings.com (Beverage Testing Institute):
"Buttery aromas and flavors of butterscotch, cola nut, brown butter maple baked apple, and right out of the oven raisin date muffin with a creamy, vibrant, off-dry medium-full body and a warming, epic, long finish with notes of roasted apricot, marzipan, banana, and allspice. A world class rum that is a symphony of maple, spice, sun-ripened fruit and pastry shop flavors, all with a wisp of smoke."

Ron Barceló official tasting notes:
"Bright coppery brown color. Harmonious hints of crème brûlée, caramelized raisins, exquisite dried spices and dried cherries. Smooth entry with a semi-dry, but fruity body of great depth, evolving layers of nutty spice layers typical of fine European wood. Finishes with a long aftertaste of pepper leaf and elegant tobacco."

RumX community (AFD, extended tasting note):
"Surprisingly dry and tasty Barceló and a super nice color! Great nose of coconut, cinnamon, tobacco and prunes. On the palate there is ginger, honey, some fresh citrus fruit, slightly nutty and spicy, plus prunes and raisins and again tobacco, as well as dark chocolate. All in all, amazingly complex and full-bodied. A positive surprise."

RumRatings community:
"The color is a chestnut brown, darker than the 30th Anniversary edition. At 43% you get just a slight burn. It's smooth and sweet with a long lasting glow. Caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, oak, and just a hint of nutmeg or a similar baking spice? Smooth drinking and it's hard to stop at just one. Overall this is the best rum produced by Barcelo."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Bright coppery brown, deep chestnut in color — noticeably darker than the house's 30th Anniversary release. Crème brûlée and caramelized raisins lead, joined by dried cherries and exquisite dried spices. Coconut, cinnamon, and tobacco add layered warmth, alongside prunes and buttery notes of butterscotch and cola nut. Right-out-of-the-oven raisin date muffin and maple round out a genuinely bakery-adjacent aromatic profile.

Palate
Smooth, semi-dry, and creamy, with a vibrant, medium-full body carrying evolving layers of nutty spice typical of fine European oak. Ginger, honey, and fresh citrus fruit add brightness, balanced against prunes, raisins, and dark chocolate. Baked apple, roasted apricot, marzipan, and banana build further complexity, with a wisp of smoke threading through the richness.

Finish
Long, warming, and elegant, closing with pepper leaf and refined tobacco. Allspice and a lingering nutty spiciness carry the close — an epic, extended finish that critics and enthusiasts alike single out as the defining quality of this expression.
