Compass Box has always been a whisky maker with a sense of play, and Brûlée Royale is one of its most playful releases. It’s inspired by François Massialot, the 17th-century French chef at the Palace of Versailles who is credited with writing the first recipe for crème brûlée, and the idea is to make a Scotch whisky that tastes like the dessert. It continues what the company calls “our adventures into patisserie.”
It’s an unusual recipe, built around the casks as much as the whiskies. The blend is composed of four single malts: Benrinnes (53.3%) in first-fill bourbon barrels, Clynelish (39%) in second-fill new American oak barrels, Speyburn (7.2%) in refill American oak hogsheads, and a touch (0.5%) of Ardbeg in recharred American oak. The key is the custom barrels: American white oak, “toasted and charred with scientific exactitude,” that bestow “flavours of peach, butterscotch and spiced molasses.” In Compass Box’s words: “Brûlée Royale sees Clynelish fruit and Benrinnes custard ooze together at a silken 49% ABV,” with “gloss and texture from the inclusion of the Speyburn, considerably aged in recharred barrels, caramelise perfectly in a sweet sugar seal.” The whisky is bottled non-chill filtered, with natural colour, in August 2025, at 49% ABV (98 proof), and only 8,556 bottles were made.
The official tasting notes describe a nose with “immediate crème brûlée, poached pears, and scatterings of freshly opened vanilla pods, opening to custard Danish and scorched sugar brittles.” The palate is “thick with clotted cream, honeyed malt, and broiled peaches, followed by custard and Tarte Tatin,” with “pannacotta” and “gentle nutmeg spice, followed by silken Jersey milk, toasted sugar, and banana split.” The color is a “deep burnished amber with warm copper-gold highlights.” It’s a creamy, sweet, dessert-like malt, with no peat and only a whisper of smoke from the tiny Ardbeg portion.
There are no independent professional reviews yet for this release, and, as with any concept whisky, it’s a dessert-style whisky that’s best suited to people who like sweet, creamy drams. It’s a collector’s bottle with a clear story, and an easy gift for foodies and whisky fans who like a good concept. Enjoy it neat, or with a few drops of water, perhaps with a dessert.
