Probitas is genuinely historic — the first-ever direct collaboration between distilleries on two different Caribbean islands, uniting Foursquare Rum Distillery in Saint Philip, Barbados, with Hampden Estate, one of Jamaica's oldest continuously operating distilleries, in Trelawny. The blend was crafted by Master Distiller and Blender Richard Seale, and translated from Latin, "Probitas" means honesty — a fitting name, since the rum is produced without added sugar, flavoring, or color, adhering strictly to the proposed Barbados Rum Geographical Indication standards Seale has championed throughout his career. Before it carried this name, the rum was originally created exclusively for the Swedish market under the name "Veritas," before gaining broader popularity and expanding internationally as Probitas.
The blend unites three genuinely distinct components: a two-year tropically aged Foursquare pot still rum (lending a touch of natural color), an unaged Foursquare twin-column Coffey still rum, and an unaged Hampden Estate pot still rum, produced under Hampden's OWH low-ester marque. Foursquare's own signature warm confection character anchors the blend, while Hampden's genuinely ester-forward rum makes its presence known throughout, lending high-toned fruit esters from nose to finish — a real showcase of two distinct national rum styles brought together in one bottle.
Wine Enthusiast awarded a genuine 93 Points. Skurnik Wines' official tasting notes describe "cascading aromas of tropical fruit and baking spice" highlighting "plantain, mascarpone, and strawberry," the palate "uncategorically robust and luscious," showing "grassy, underripe mango, coconut oil, and marzipan with black pepper, allspice, and grilled pineapple on the finish." Bitters and Bottles' tasting confirms a nose "creamy with custard and vanilla, citrus and a basket of fresh tropical fruit," the palate "fully textured and oily, with flavors of molasses and kola nut, marshmallow, banana, guava, and more." The Liquor Barn's extended tasting adds "fresh sugar cane, vanilla bean, and ripe banana" up front, developing "creamy custard, coconut, citrus zest, and a subtle grassy quality that nods to the pot still component from Hampden," the entry "surprisingly full-textured and oily for a white rum." This is genuinely a game-changer within the white rum category — real complexity and depth from a spirit built specifically to prove white rum can carry serious character, not just neutral clean spirit.
