Origins & Craftsmanship
Ron Matusalem traces its origins to 1872 in Santiago de Cuba, where Spanish founders introduced traditional distillation techniques and the solera aging system, a method commonly used in sherry production that blends rums of different ages for depth and consistency.
Today the rum is produced in the Dominican Republic, continuing the family tradition of crafting smooth, Cuban-style rum with long maturation and careful blending.
The Gran Reserva 23 expression represents one of the brand’s most refined releases. It is produced from molasses-based rum and matured using the solera system with rums aged up to 23 years, allowing older and younger rums to marry gradually in oak barrels.
During this maturation process, the rum develops deep color and complex flavors while maintaining the smooth, elegant character that defines the Matusalem house style.
The rum is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) and aged in oak barrels, often including French oak, which contributes notes of vanilla, spice, and toasted wood.
The result is a refined sipping rum that balances sweetness, spice, and oak with remarkable smoothness.
