Effen Vodka 750ml

“Effen” is a Dutch word meaning “smooth, even, and balanced,” and the vodka lives up to it. It’s made by Hooghoudt Distillers in Groningen, in the northern Netherlands, a fourth-generation family distillery with roots going back to 1888, which specializes in vodka made from a century-old Dutch recipe built on wheat. Effen launched in the US in 2003 and is now part of the Suntory Global Spirits family of brands.

The process is built around gentleness. The wheat spirit is made in a continuous column still, and the makers say it’s distilled at much lower temperatures than many premium vodkas to avoid “caramelisation” of the distillate. It’s then filtered and blended with pure spring water from the Groningen reservoir, and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof).

The tasting notes are consistent about a clean, soft, slightly sweet vodka. Distiller’s John Rankin found “a pleasantly soft nose of creamed wheat, toasted vanilla, and hints of dulce de leche,” with a palate that “fills the mouth with a pleasant richness and echoes many of the sweet aromatics in an inviting but not saccharine way,” and “a pleasantly smooth” finish with “a creamy character that will pair nicely in fruit juices or sweeter cocktails” (84 points). Difford’s Guide found “a neutral, mineral nose” and “a very clean palate with only cracked black pepper spirit spice offering any discernible flavour,” adding: “for those who like their vodka clean and neutral this is almost impossible to fault.” Other descriptions find “delicate hints of citrus, sweet grain, and a subtle touch of vanilla” on the nose and “a bright, silky mouthfeel with nuanced flavors of wheat, lemon zest, and a subtle tease of licorice.” Sources differ on details such as the exact wheat origin and filtration method, but all agree on the character.

It’s designed to be a clean, vibrant base for cocktails: a martini served very cold, a vodka soda or tonic, a Moscow mule, a Bloody Mary, or a cosmopolitan. It’s also pleasant neat and chilled, particularly with smoked salmon, oysters, or charcuterie.
