Alsace is one of the world’s great homes of fruit distillation, and Distillerie Massenez, founded in 1870 and still family run, is one of its best-known names. The distillery is known for guarding “its secret recipes and passing them on from generation to generation.” Golden Eight is one of its most distinctive creations: a Williams pear liqueur “enhanced by a more than 8-year-old pear eau-de-vie,” which gives it “a long-lasting taste in the palate and notes of vanilla and caramel.” It takes about 20 pounds of pears to produce each bottle.
That aged eau-de-vie is what sets it apart from the typical pear liqueur: the extra years in oak add vanilla, caramel, and warmth to the fresh pear character. The result has “a beautiful amber color and fiery golden highlights.” The distillery describes the experience: “at the opening of the bottle, a powerful, warm Pear Williams aroma is released, shimmering with generous notes, to pleasure and incite the taste. Then, like a delicate and sensual symphony, all the pear aromas are gently offered, from the freshly harvested fruits to the complex vanilla and caramelized bouquet.” An importer adds “all the aromas of the pear between just picked fruit, almost candied and marmalade, before delicately giving birth to vanilla and the caramelised notes vanishing in light cascades of the eau de vie.”
Other descriptions find “ripe Williams pear, white flowers, and honey, complemented by hints of vanilla and delicate citrus” on the nose, a palate of “juicy Williams pear, baked orchard fruit, and light caramel” with “sweet spice and soft floral undertones,” and a finish that is “long, balanced, and fresh with lingering notes of sweet orchard fruit and a soft pastry-like warmth.” At 25% ABV (50 proof), it is sweet and rounded, in the dessert-liqueur style, though the eau-de-vie gives it more backbone than a typical cordial.
Serve it chilled (8-10°C) as an aperitif or digestif, over ice, with coffee, or alongside desserts such as tarte tatin, vanilla ice cream, and blue cheese. It also works in cocktails such as a Golden Pear Martini, and adds depth to sparkling wine. It’s an elegant gift in a pear-shaped bottle, and a distinctive pour for brandy and eau-de-vie lovers.
G.E. Massenez Golden Eight is produced by Distillerie Massenez in Dieffenbach-au-Val, Alsace, France (founded 1870). It is a Williams pear liqueur made with about 20 pounds of pears per bottle and enhanced by a Williams pear eau-de-vie aged more than 8 years. Bottled at 25% ABV / 50 proof, 750ml.
