Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge is one of the best-known liqueurs in the world, created in 1880 by Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle by marrying Cognac with the essence of bitter Haitian oranges. Cuvée du Centenaire is its prestige expression, first made in 1927 in limited quantities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the house, and first served at a reception at the Villa des Cèdres, the Côte d’Azur home of King Leopold II of Belgium. Its identity is more Cognac than orange: the blend is 82% Cognac and 18% orange liqueur, which is the reverse of the proportions of many orange liqueurs.
The Cognac is the difference. It comes from the top two crus, Grande and Petite Champagne, and the eaux-de-vie average between 12 and 25 years old, “equal to the best XO Cognacs,” with some as old as 30. It’s blended with the essence of wild tropical bitter oranges, with about 237 grams of sugar per liter, and each completed batch is matured in large oak casks for at least two years. It’s bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in the distinctive alembic-still-shaped bottle.
The producer’s tasting notes describe a “medium amber tinged with copper,” a nose of “candied orange scents subtly fused with hints of spice,” and a flavor of “dried fruit, gingerbread, and nutmeg,” with a “lovely lingering finish with nuances of macerated orange.” Difford’s Guide found “a huge burst of rich orange zest with leathery pastry and vanilla cognac, dried fruits, subtle cinnamon, pepper, and turmeric spice,” a taste that is “Cognac-forward, opulently velvety, honeyed with caramelised orange, candied and dried orange peel, woody vanilla, bitter marmalade, gingerbread and subtle spices — turmeric, nutmeg, and mild tobacco,” and “a long finish with cinnamon, gingerbread, balsamic, oak and bitter almond,” concluding: “a truly luxuriant liqueur with a richness balanced by flavour intensity.” Wine Enthusiast scored it 96 points. Retailers add “hints of tobacco and balsamic originating from the cognac,” and “round and velvety notes” from the older Cognac blend.
It’s a sipping liqueur: serve it neat in a Cognac glass or a small tumbler, or over a single large ice cube, as an after-dinner pour. It’s also a rare, well-regarded upgrade for classic cocktails that call for Grand Marnier, such as a Cadillac Margarita or Sidecar, though many will keep it for sipping. It pairs with dark chocolate, orange-chocolate desserts, crêpes Suzette, and aged cheeses. Because the house was founded in 1827, 2027 will be its bicentenary, which makes the Centenaire a timely gift.
