Parker’s Heritage Collection is Heaven Hill’s annual tribute to its late Master Distiller Parker Beam, and each year’s release explores a different aspect of whiskey-making that Parker cared about. The 20th Edition, released in 2026, looks at a technique he was known for: backset. Backset is the liquid left in the still after distillation, added back into the next fermentation. Most distillers use bourbon backset, but the 20th Edition is made with rye whiskey backset, “one of Parker Beam’s signature moves,” which is uncommon today and, as Drinkhacker put it, “makes this release particularly intriguing.”
The whiskey is a 14-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon, selected from 100 barrels distilled between October 2011 and January 2012, aged across multiple floors and rickhouses, from Heaven Hill’s traditional bourbon mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley. It’s bottled uncut and non-chill filtered at its natural barrel proof of 118 proof (59% ABV). Master Distiller Conor O’Driscoll describes it as “a 14-year-old bourbon of remarkable depth, balance, and spice, a fitting reflection of Beam’s belief that the smallest details of whiskey making shape the final pour.”
The official tasting notes describe a burnished copper bourbon with a nose of “sweet oak, toasted nuts, and citrus oil,” a palate of “toasted oak, butterscotch, and vanilla with orange zest,” and a finish of “toasted oak, caramelized sugar, and a hint of white pepper.” Retailers add leather, dark brown sugar, and “peppery spice from the rye backset running through the mid-palate.”
Reviewers have been more divided than the series’ reputation would suggest, and that’s worth sharing with customers. Drinkhacker found it “a little tight at first blush (at 59% ABV, that’s understandable),” with water opening “more traditional notes of vanilla and milk chocolate,” then black tea turning to green tea, and “notes of tobacco becoming more forceful on the surprisingly pushy, lengthy finish.” People’s Bourbon Review scored it 78, finding it “surprisingly mild for a 118-proof bourbon” on the nose but hot on the first pour, and the tasting “disjointed,” with a finish that didn’t develop as expected from a 14-year-old. As that reviewer notes, “age and proof alone don’t guarantee a great bourbon.”
It’s a collectible, and for many buyers the story of Parker Beam, the rye backset, and the 100-barrel selection is the draw. Parker’s Heritage releases are highly allocated, and secondary-market prices run well above retail. Sip it neat, and give it water and time.
