Peerless Double Oak began as a fix for a problem, not a plan. Kentucky Peerless filled its first barrel in March 2015 and released its debut whiskey, a rye, in May 2017 — but somewhere along the way, a batch of leaky barrels forced the team to transfer whiskey into fresh new charred oak casks simply to save it from being lost entirely. The resulting liquid was so genuinely compelling that what started as damage control became a deliberate practice, and Peerless Double Oak Bourbon was officially introduced as a permanent small-batch release in September 2021, with a rye counterpart following in November 2022.
The technique itself is straightforward but demanding: each barrel of Peerless bourbon is exposed to two separate casks, receiving two full extractions from new American charred oak rather than the single maturation period most bourbon undergoes. To balance out all the delicious, rich, and sweet oak flavors, there are upfront herbaceous notes of fennel, cloves, spearmint, and green pepper. I wasn't expecting all the upfront herbaceous flavors either, which do a great job of balancing the oak while adding complexity. But not everyone is into double-oaked whiskeys. Some find them too sweet or boring."
