Talisker's origin story is genuinely dramatic — founders Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill established the distillery in 1830 in Carbost, on the shores of Loch Harport on the Isle of Skye, leasing the site from the chieftain of Clan MacLeod, following several false starts elsewhere. Nearly two centuries later, Talisker remains the oldest working distillery on Skye, its current buildings largely dating to a 1960s rebuild following a fire. The 10-Year-Old itself has an interesting history of its own: Talisker was originally sold as an 8-year-old single malt until 1989, when the 10-Year expression was introduced as one of Diageo's Classic Malts — the whisky the world knows today as Talisker's flagship.

The whisky's signature full-bodied character comes directly from a genuinely distinctive piece of equipment: Talisker's copper pot stills are fitted with unusual swan-shaped lye pipes and worm tubs, a configuration that causes a portion of the vapor to condense and run back into the still for redistillation before it ever reaches the cooler. Combined with soft water drawn from one of fourteen underground springs rising from Hawk Hill — the same source Talisker has used since its founding — and traditional wooden washback fermentation, this process gives Talisker its unmistakable, powerful profile.
