PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Tequila Ocho is the original single-field, single-estate tequila: instead of blending agave from many sources, each release comes from one named field, harvested in one year, so that it tastes of a specific place. It was founded by Carlos Camarena, a fifth-generation agave grower and maestro tequilero, and the late Tomas Estes, and it’s distilled at Tequilera Los Alambiques in Arandas, in the Highlands of Jalisco. This Añejo comes from Rancho Las Raíces, a field due east of the distillery, and it starts as a tequila made from overripe agave, “distilled with the purpose of preserving the identity of the terroir.”
What sets it apart is the barrel. The tequila rests for a full year in French oak casks that previously held Cognac from Ferrand, the house owned by master blender Alexandre Gabriel since 1989. The casks traveled more than 8,800 kilometers from Charente, France to Arandas. This is the third collaboration between Ocho and Ferrand: in 2019, they released three single-barrel tequilas finished in Planteray rum and Ferrand Cognac barrels, a project that was the first to age tequila in former rum casks, and in 2020 came the first Barrel Select range, with three añejos aged in rum barrels. The latest release uses only Ferrand Cognac casks. Camarena says, “Among the many things our families have in common is taking great care to honor the generations that came before us and laid the groundwork for us to thrive doing exactly what we love.”
The official notes are unusually savory for an añejo. The nose is “cherry, ground cinnamon, burnt cajeta, green notes of celery and cilantro, green guava, and plenty of wet earth.” The palate is “salted caramel, vibrant minerality, cooked agave, ginger, intense coffee, and fresh sawdust.” The brand says that “the influence of the barrel accompanies the agave without overshadowing its origin.” It’s additive-free, bottled at 44.4% ABV (88.8 proof, a nod to the brand’s number eight), in an extremely limited, small-batch release, available from August 2026 in a handful of US states (California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia) and a few international markets.
No independent reviews have been published yet. It’s a tequila for agave purists and Cognac drinkers: earthy, herbal, and mineral, with caramel and coffee from the oak rather than heavy sweetness. Sip it neat, in a copita or small tumbler, and give it a few minutes in the glass.
