The Glenturret claims to be Scotland’s oldest working distillery, with a legitimate history dating to 1763 (and an illicit still on the same site as early as 1717), on the banks of the River Turret near Crieff, in Perthshire. For decades its spirit was best known as part of The Famous Grouse blend, and in recent years it has built a reputation for its own single malts, with a range of rare, ultra-aged releases at the top.
The 30 Year Old is one of those, and each year’s release is a different assembly. The 2023 release came from “a search for specific flavours,” found in five of the distillery’s older casks: two European oak, two American oak hogsheads, and one port pipe. Whisky maker Bob Dalgarno blended them, with each cask contributing a distinct element. European oak “imparts a traditional rich fruit flavour combined with hints of brandy and ginger.” The port pipe “imbues a warm ruby hue and touches of red fruits.” The two American oak hogsheads add “sweeter notes of tropical fruit and bananas inspired by the character of the distillery’s delicate new make spirit.” It’s unpeated, bottled at a gentle 42.7% ABV (85.4 proof), and only 500 numbered bottles were released worldwide as part of the “Extremely Scarce” collection, alongside the 25 and 35 Year Olds.
The distillery’s tasting notes: “A summer’s day picnic: tropical fruit salad and ripening bananas with a garnish of prunes and figs. Sweet brandy snaps dusted with ginger and cinnamon. A compote of red fruits topped by meringue and vanilla ice cream delivers a fruity finish shaded by subtle oak.” On Whiskybase, a connoisseur-level reviewer scored the release 88 points after tasting it at a horizontal tasting of Glenturret’s 2023 range (25, 30, and 35 Year Olds). For context, an earlier 2022 release of the 30 Year Old was scored 89.33 by the community, and a reviewer’s note on it, “sublimely soft yet still rich, despite the ABV being on the low side,” applies well to this style: delicate, fruity, and elegant, not big or sherry-heavy.
It’s a soft, tropical, red-fruited, lightly spiced malt for a special occasion: a milestone gift, a collector’s bottle, and an after-dinner pour. Enjoy it neat, slowly, in a Glencairn glass, with a few drops of water if you like.
