PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The London No. 1 is best known for its distinctive blue color, which comes from gardenia, one of its 12 botanicals, and the Sherry Cask version takes a very different direction. It begins as the same London Dry gin, distilled in copper stills from a maceration of 12 botanicals in grain alcohol, and then is rested for three months in American oak casks that previously held Tío Pepe Fino sherry from Jerez for more than ten years. That barrel time gives the gin a pale gold color and a delicate, vinous character without overpowering the juniper.
Fino is the driest, lightest style of sherry, with notes of almond and a salty tang, and the sherry cask influence here is subtle. At 43% ABV (86 proof), it’s a gin that, as the producer puts it, is “the perfect balance to offer the drinker a harmony between the aromatic characters of the gin and wood.” The official notes describe “a pleasant, fragrant aroma with notes of juniper berries and a mix of botanicals, enhanced by a subtle touch of wood with vinous sensations,” a palate that is “smooth, elegant, and complex, with well-integrated notes of alcohol and wood,” and a “long and velvety finish.” Other descriptions find “fresh juniper, spicy cinnamon, fine almond and coriander, and a hint of fino sherry” on the nose, “a beautiful balance of juniper, gentle cinnamon, and the subtle sweetness of the sherry” on the palate, and “touches of almond, sea salt, and a whisper of violet-like florals.”
Wine Enthusiast’s Kara Newman scored it 90 Points: “Rested for three months in sherry casks, this limited edition gin has a pale-gold hue and faint almond whiff. The palate surprises with mild sweetness and a saline hint, suggesting vanilla cookies sprinkled with sea salt, rounding into a baking spice finish accented with oak.”
It’s a gin for people who like a bit of barrel influence without leaving the gin world, and for whiskey, sherry, and Martini fans looking for something with more depth than a standard London Dry. It makes a rich Martini, a Negroni with extra texture, or a gin fizz, and it’s pleasant on the rocks or with a quality tonic and an orange twist.
