PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Highland Park 12 Year Old is genuinely the expression that started it all — the distillery's very first core bottling, dating back to 1979, and it remains the heart of the range to this day. The distillery itself sits in Kirkwall, on the Orkney Islands, proudly calling itself the northernmost distillery in all of Scotland, and the 12 Year Old has long served as the brand's own gateway dram — a genuinely balanced, approachable introduction to Highland Park's signature style of gentle heathery peat smoke layered over honeyed sweetness. The whisky matures predominantly in sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, a combination that gives it real spice and citrus character alongside that distinctive, restrained smokiness.

Master of Malt's tasting found it "fresh, clean and very aromatic," with "floral notes" abounding "the senses with a light grassiness," alongside "notes of creamy Manuka honey and a touch of juicy citrus with cream and a well-balanced sweetness," the palate "rather full with a pleasant depth," with "a grilled orange" lurking "somewhere in the substratum," joined by "notes of granary toast and green tea with jasmine." The Whiskey Wash's Charles Steele found "smoke cloaked in honey and orange blossoms," with "a subtle spicy pop like peppercorns" and "green pears" emerging on the backend, the palate showing "just lovely peat smoke subtly cloaked with light cigar wrapper, sea salt, honey, honeydew melon, and wheat grass," concluding it's "a perfect intro Scotch" at "a real value purchase" — genuinely difficult to find in a category where entry points are often either overpriced or not worth drinking. Difford's Guide's tasting found "lime blossom, lime zest, leather and heather honey with faint wisps of smoke" on the nose, developing "quince and pear" with water, the taste "rich and full-flavoured while also dry and elegant," combining "leather, creamy caramel and butterscotch, lightly honeyed apple or pear, garnished with a tiny hint of smoke and cloves." This is genuinely one of the most recognizable, well-loved gateway single malts in all of Scotch — real, balanced Orkney character that's introduced countless drinkers to peated whisky without ever overwhelming them.

Master of Malt (official tasting note):
"Nose: Fresh, clean and very aromatic. Floral notes abound the senses with a light grassiness. Notes of creamy Manuka honey and a touch of juicy citrus with cream and a well-balanced sweetness. Palate: Rather full with a pleasant depth. Lurking somewhere in the substratum a grilled orange lies. Notes of granary toast and green tea with jasmine. A touch of sweetness."

Charles Steele, The Whiskey Wash (extended independent review):
"Smoke cloaked in honey and orange blossoms. There is a subtle spicy pop like peppercorns. The backend brings out green pears. Palate: Just lovely peat smoke subtly cloaked with light cigar wrapper, sea salt, honey, honeydew melon, and wheat grass form a complex tapestry on the tongue. To me, this is a perfect intro Scotch and the price point makes it a real value purchase."

Difford's Guide (extended independent review):
"Appearance: Clear, mid-deep golden amber with burnished gold highlights. Aroma: Lime blossom, lime zest, leather and heather honey with faint wisps of smoke. Quince and pear emerge with water. Taste: Rich and full-flavoured while also dry and elegant, with a combination of leather, creamy caramel and butterscotch, lightly honeyed apple or pear, garnished with a tiny hint of smoke and cloves. Aftertaste: Another flourish of flavours with a hint of iodine and peat with lingering gentle smoke."
