In 2008,Juan Dobel — 11th generation tequilamaker, heir to over 250 years ofdistilling heritage in Jalisco —did something no one in thetequila category had donecommercially: he blended reposado,añejo, and extra añejo tequilas,aged them in new white oakbarrels sourced from the Balkan regionof Eastern Europe,then filtered the assembled blend tocrystal clarity, removing all colorwhile preserving the complex flavorcompounds that three different ageexpressions had developed across theirrespective maturation periods. Hecalled it Diamante. He launched it inthe United States as the world's firstcristalino tequila.
What happened nextis one of the most significantcategory-creation stories in modern spirits history. Diamante spent four years alone at the top of a category it had invented before Don Julio 70 — the Don Julio-branded cristalino that introduced the style to a mass audience — arrived in 2012. Today, every major tequila house produces a cristalino expression. The category Diamante created is worth billions of dollars in annual global sales. And Maestro Dobel Diamante remains the original.
Wine Enthusiast awarded 93 Points — "luscious butterscotch flavor and complex layering." VinePair found it "surprisingly spicy and vibrant, especially compared to most othercristalinos," noting that "each sipcoats the palate with luxurious weightand a depth of flavors that captureboth agave's character and theinfluence of oak aging." MaestroDobel Tequila was born from 11generations of tequila mastery inJalisco, Mexico, with deep rootsstretching back over 250 years. JuanDobel, the 11th generation, founded thebrand in 2003 and introduced it to theAmerican market in 2008 — the same yearDiamante launched as the world's firstcommercially available cristalino. Thebrand is now distributed by ProximoSpirits and continues to operate fromJalisco, where the agave for everyDobel expression is grown onfamily-owned ranches in the volcaniclowlands of western Jalisco.
Lowlandagave from western Jalisco produces acharacteristically different flavorprofile from the Highlandagave that the most celebratedreposados and añejos typically use:lighter, more herbal, and morecitrus-forward, with the mineralcharacter of the volcanic soilproviding the specific freshnessthat prevents the multi-aged Diamanteblend from becoming simply heavy andsweet. Every agave plant is 100% BlueWeber, harvested at full maturity, anddouble-distilled using waterextracted from naturally-occurringunderground aquifers sourced from thevolcano in Tequila, Jalisco.
TheDiamante's most technically unusualproduction decision is the barrelsource: new white oak barrels from theBalkan region of EasternEurope rather than the American orFrench oak that virtuallyevery other tequila producer uses.Balkan oak — sourced from the forestsof Croatia, Slovenia, or Serbia, wherethe same tight-grained sessile oak(Quercus petraea) that produces finewine barrels in Hungary and Francegrows in abundance — imparts a specificaromatic profile that is morerestrained and more specifically spicedthan American white oak, with a tanninstructure that is finer-grained thanheavier European oak. The result is anoak contribution that adds complexitywithout the vanilla-caramel dominanceof American oak or the heavierdried-fruit quality of Spanish orFrench casks.
The assembled blend —reposado, añejo, and extra añejocomponents in each batch — is thendouble-filtered to remove all colorwhile retaining flavor.
