PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Firebreak Añejo Tequila is a smooth, oak-aged tequila crafted to emphasize richness and sipping elegance. Produced from 100% Blue Weber agave in the highlands of Jalisco, it develops a warm profile of caramel, vanilla, and dark fruit during extended barrel aging. The style leans toward a whiskey-like añejo—soft, slightly smoky, and layered with honeyed sweetness—making it appealing to tequila enthusiasts and bourbon drinkers alike.
The founder of Firebreak Tequila, Berkeley “Augie” Johnson, survived the devastating Thomas Fire in California in 2017, which destroyed his home and much of his community. After that experience, he created the brand partly as a way to support wildfire prevention and honor first responders.
A firebreak is a strip of land designed to slow or stop the spread of wildfires by removing vegetation or planting species that resist burning.
Agave plants—used to make tequila—have very high water content, which means they can naturally act as fire-resistant barriers in dry landscapes.
The tequila’s mission ties directly to that concept:
Firebreak Tequila is produced from 100% Blue Weber agave grown in Los Altos de Jalisco, one of the most respected tequila-growing regions in Mexico. The agave is harvested, cooked, fermented, and distilled using traditional methods to highlight the natural sweetness of the plant.
The spirit is then aged for at least 18 months in oak barrels, allowing the tequila to absorb deep flavors from the wood while softening the bright agave character. This aging process develops the signature añejo profile—richer texture, darker color, and layered notes of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak.
Firebreak emphasizes a heritage of smooth, sipping-style añejos, produced in collaboration with the Casa Aceves family estate in the “Golden Tequila Triangle” of Jalisco. The goal is to create a tequila with the complexity and elegance of fine aged spirits such as cognac or single malt whisky.
The finished tequila is typically bottled around 40% ABV (80 proof).
At the 2023 Bartender Spirits Awards, Firebreak Premium Añejo Tequila received a Bronze Medal with 78 points, with judges noting aromas reminiscent of marzipan and grassy agave alongside pastry-like cinnamon notes on the palate.
