The Macallan Double Cask range was built to fill the space left by the brand's discontinued Triple Cask line, marrying Macallan's classic European oak maturation with the more overt sweetness of American oak. Both types are seasoned with sherry in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, under the watchful eye of Macallan's own Master of Wood. Distinct from the Fine Oak line, which historically used ex-bourbon American oak, Double Cask uses sherry-seasoned casks across both wood types, a real point of technical distinction within Macallan's crowded core range. One reviewer counted 37 different Macallan entries at a single Ohio liquor store.
Macallan was established in 1824, licensed by Alexander Reid on the Easter Elchies estate overlooking the River Spey. It spent much of its early history as a blending malt before becoming one of the most recognizable luxury single malt brands in the world. The most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold at auction was a Macallan. In 2025, the brand refreshed Double Cask 12's bottle and label design while keeping the same liquid inside.
Reception among independent reviewers is mixed, and worth sharing honestly. The Whisky Exchange's tasting describes "an inviting palate of warm oak, orange zest, toasted fruitcake and ginger biscuits with hints of mocha," noting the American oak brings "creamy vanilla that persist in the finish" while European oak brings "structure and definition." Maltspedia's more critical review found it "a well-built, professional whisky that lacks character," calling it "the quintessential entry-level luxury Scotch — perfectly fine, but rarely moving," and noting the 40% bottling strength "leaves the body thinner than the distillery's reputation prepares you for." Phil Dwyer's review for The Whiskey Wash called it "a great introduction bottle if you've never tried Macallan before," though he advised "jumping straight in with the Sherry Oak release for a more classic Macallan profile." FilmWhiskey's review landed at a middling 6/10. This is smooth, approachable Speyside whisky with real technical craft behind it, though opinion is divided on whether it lives up to the Macallan name.
The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky is produced by The Macallan, established in 1824 by Alexander Reid on the Easter Elchies estate in Speyside, Scotland. The whisky matures a minimum of 12 years in a combination of American and European oak casks, both seasoned with sherry wine in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, hand-selected under the direction of Macallan's Master of Wood.
Part of the Double Cask range, launched in 2016 to fill the space left by the discontinued Triple Cask line, this expression is bottled in natural colour. In 2025, Macallan introduced a refined bottle and label design across the range. Bottled at 43% ABV / 86 proof, 750ml.
The Whisky Exchange (official tasting note):
"This luxurious Speyside whisky boasts an inviting palate of warm oak, orange zest, toasted fruitcake and ginger biscuits with hints of mocha. After twelve years in a combination of European and American oak casks seasoned with sherry, it offers a great example of the rich and graceful style for which The Macallan is famous. You'll get a sense of the American oak influence with notes of creamy vanilla that persist in the finish, while the European oak brings structure and definition."
Maltspedia (extended independent review):
"The Macallan 12 Double Cask is a high-status daily drinker that is undeniably smooth and easy to like, though it often feels like a marketing-led product. It is a well-built, professional whisky that lacks character, making it appear overpriced when compared to more honest craft-presented malts. It is the quintessential entry-level luxury Scotch — perfectly fine, but rarely moving. The palate shows the two-wood dynamic clearly — American oak sweetness of maple, honey, and cream pulling against spicy European oak tannins, with candied ginger, black pepper, and raisins in the middle — but the 40% bottling strength leaves the body thinner than the distillery's reputation prepares you for; the finish is functional rather than distinguished, closing on dry woodiness, tobacco ash, bitter chocolate, and baking spice without lingering long."
Phil Dwyer, The Whiskey Wash (extended independent review):
"It's a great introduction bottle if you've never tried Macallan before. But I'd advise jumping straight in with the Sherry Oak release for a more classic Macallan profile."
FilmWhiskey (extended independent review): 6/10

Creamy butterscotch and candied orange peel lead, joined by subtle oak spice, alongside vanilla fudge and honey.
Palate
Rich sherry sweetness, with honey and vanilla carrying the entry, developing warm baking spice, candied ginger, black pepper, and raisin, balanced by structured European oak tannin.
Finish
Smooth and lingering in the official notes; independent reviewers find it closes somewhat lighter, with dry woodiness, tobacco ash, and bitter chocolate.

#17 on Whiskey Advocate's Top 20 Whiskies of 2017!
"Two oaks are better than one in this single malt, which marries whiskies matured in sherry-seasoned casks of both American and European oak. The sherry imparts aromas of raisins, figs, hazelnuts, blanched almonds, candied orange peel, and leather. A backbone of vanilla sweetness on the palate supports layers of ginger and white pepper, dark chocolate, leather, raisins, toasted hazelnuts, and orange oil. This Macallan joins the core line between the Sherry Oak and Fine Oak ranges. Warming and rich without being syrupy, it doubles up on accessibility with its balance and remarkably affordable price for its quality and age. —Susannah Skiver Barton"
Made from a combination of American and European oak casks seasoned in Jerez, Spain.
"A decadent nose of cloved oranges, fruit cake, shortbread cookie, and toasted sandalwood exudes from this delightful whisky. The indulgent flavors are further continued on the lush palate and resonate seemingly endlessly on the dessert-like finish." 96 Points, Extraordinary, Ultimate Recommendation 2017 Ultimate Spirits Challenge
