Glengyle Distillery has a genuinely dramatic history behind it — founded in 1872 in the heart of Campbeltown, once Scotland's "whisky capital," the distillery closed in 1925 during the industry's great crisis and sat silent for nearly 80 years before finally reopening in 2004 under Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd., a sister company to the celebrated Springbank Distillery. Because the name "Glengyle" was already registered elsewhere as a blended whisky brand, the distillery's own single malt is released instead under the name Kilkerran — an old historic name for Campbeltown itself.

Batch No. 14 is the fourteenth release in Kilkerran's ongoing Heavily Peated series, a limited-edition line released twice yearly, matured since Batch 7 (September 2022) in a consistent recipe of 90% ex-bourbon and 10% ex-sherry casks. And for good reason: a high proportion of bourbon casks simply benefits Kilkerran. This Batch #14 is in no way inferior in quality to its predecessors, but is unique in that it lacks caramel notes. This is a rare phenomenon for Kilkerran and is usually reserved for older bottlings. A very pleasant smoky aroma wafts from the glass, both distinctly peaty and with a pronounced note of smoked ham... even at a slight distance from the glass, I perceive the ham-like peaty smoke note much more intensely than when nosing from the usual distance. Dried herbs, grapefruit, citrus zest, damp straw, vanilla, rapeseed honey. A crisp start, immediately noticeably smoky, mirabelle plums, apricots, tangerines, pineapple, lemon juice, grapefruit, refreshingly tart, tangy. It has a certain farmyard character, seems original, unpretentious, unadorned, like every batch of Kilkerran HP so far. A touch of toffee and nougat, but: no caramel. Wow, that's rare for a Kilkerran, leaning slightly towards Longrow."
